FROM: Donna G. Schwartz, Chief Deputy City Clerk
DATE: June 3, 2025
SUBJECT: Proclamation – “Women Veterans Day” - June 12, 2025
The City Council will p resent a Proclamation recognizing June 12, 2025, as “Women Veterans Day” to honor and recognize the bravery of all women veterans, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives to protect our state and country.
BACKGROUND:
On June 12, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women to serve as permanent members of the U.S. military.
Since then, women have played vital roles in every branch, with their numbers expected to reach 20 percent of the veteran population by 2045.
In Santa Barbara County, the She Raised Her Hand initiative supports women veterans by fostering community, identity, and purpose. Local women have served honorably from World War II to today’s conflicts, often in challenging and dangerous roles.
Women veterans have contributed significantly to both national defense and social progress, championing equal rights and shaping the future of our country. This proclamation honors their courage, leadership, and enduring impact on our communities and nation.
