SUBJECT: Proclamation – “Recreation and Parks Month” – July 2025
The City Council will present a Proclamation declaring July 2025 as Recreation and Parks Month in the City of Santa Maria to recognize the essential services, programs, and community events provided by the Recreation and Parks Department.
BACKGROUND:
Each year, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) recognizes July as Recreation and Parks Month to celebrate the essential role local park and recreation agencies play in the lives of individuals, families, and communities. The month -long recognition highlights the positive impact of public spaces, recreation programming, and community events on physical health, mental wellness, environmental stewardship, and local economies.
The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department supports this national effort by celebrating the contributions of th e City's park and recreation professionals, and the value of our public spaces and programs in enhancing the quality of life for all Santa Marians.
DISCUSSION:
The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department maintains 33 public parks, registers o ver 10,000 participants annually in recreation programs, and organizes or supports community events that reach tens of thousands of residents and visitors. These services provide safe, inclusive, and enriching opportunities for physical activity, cultural celebration, social connection, and environmental education.
2 The attached Proclamation recognizes July 2025 as Recreation and Parks Month in the City of Santa Maria. This ceremonial recognition reflects the City Council’s support and appreciation for th e vital work of the Recreation and Parks Department and aligns with national efforts to raise awareness of the essential role of local parks and recreation services. Staff encourage the community to participate in activities and events throughout the month of July that celebrate the importance of recreation and parks.
