TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Donna G. Schwartz, Deputy City Clerk
DATE: September 16, 2025
SUBJECT: Proclamation - National Voter Registration Day - September 16, 2025
The City Council will present a Proclamation recognizing September 16, 2025, as “National Voter Registration Day” to encourage residents to encourage its residents to support activities to secure all voting rights and full access.
BACKGROUND:
Voting is both a fundamental right and a cornerstone of democracy in the United States, giving citizens the opportunity to shape their communities and government at the local, state, and national levels. National Voter Registration Day, a nonpartisan civic holiday, is dedicated to raising awareness about voter rights and opportunities and will be observed on September 16, 2025. This year is particularly significant for Santa Maria residents, as the ballot will include a Special Election in November 2025 and primary elections for local and state offices in March 2026. In preparation, the League of Women Voters will host public forums to inform and engage the community. Recognizing the importance of broad participation in the democratic process, the City of Santa Mar ia has proclaimed September 16, 2025, as National Voter Registration Day, encouraging all residents to support efforts that secure voting rights and ensure full access for every eligible voter.
