COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT

TO: Mayor and City Council

FROM: Alex Posada, Recreation and Parks Director

DATE: September 16, 2025

SUBJECT: Proclamation – Active Aging Week 2025 – October 6 through 12, 2025

The City Council will present a Proclamation declaring October 6th through 12th as Active Aging Week in the City of Santa Maria to recognize the essential services, programs, and community events provided by the Recreation and Parks Department and partners.

BACKGROUND:

Each year, the International Council on Active Aging (ICCAA) recognizes a week in October as Active Aging Week, aimed at celebrating and highlighting the positive aspects of aging. The event showcases the abilities of older adults and their valuable contributions to society while also emphasizing the role models who lead the way. The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department supports this national effort by providing free physical, social, and intellectual wellness opportunities at our Elwin Musse ll Senior Center.

DISCUSSION:

The campaign seeks to provide older adults with opportunities to engage in wellness activities and exercise in a safe, supportive environment, promoting the benefits of healthy, active lifestyles throughout their lifespan.

The attached proclamation declares October 6 th—12th as Active Aging Week. This ceremonial recognition reflects the City Council’s support and challenges society's negative perceptions of aging by demonstrating that individuals over 50 can thrive in all aspects of life, including physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, vocational, and environmental domains, regardless of age or health status.

Staff recommends that the City Council present the proclamation during the Council meeting and encourage the community to participate in activities and events throughout the week of October 6th —12th to celebrate the importance of Seniors in our community.
