COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT

TO: Mayor and City Council

FROM: David W. Rowlands, City Manager

DATE: February 3, 2026

SUBJECT: Proclamation Honoring the Life and Service of Joseph Glen Alexander

The City Council will present a Proclamation Honoring the Life and Service of Joseph Glen Alexander and commemorates January 22, 1969, as his Last Alarm.

BACKGROUND:

Joseph Glen Alexander honorably served the City of Santa Maria as an Engineer with the Santa Maria Fire Department, exemplifying dedication, professionalism, and a steadfast commitment to public safety. On January 22, 1969, while actively operating a fire engine at a structure fire near the intersection of College Drive and Mariposa Drive, Engineer Alexander suffered a fatal heart attack in the line of duty.

Engineer Alexander is recognized as the first line-of-duty death in the history of the Santa Maria Fire Department. His sacrifice serves as a solemn reminder of the inherent risks firefighters face daily and stands as a lasting testament to the courage, selflessness, and devotion required of those who answer the call to protect life and property. The City of Santa Maria remains deeply grateful for his service and honors his memory as an enduring part of the Fire Department’s history and legacy.
