DATE: April 7, 2026
SUBJECT: Proclamation Proclaiming April 2026, as “Donate Life Month”.
The City Council will present a Proclamation proclaiming April 2026, as “Donate Life Month” in the City of Santa Maria.
BACKGROUND:
Organ, eye, tissue, marrow, and blood donation are life -saving acts of compassion, yet more than 103,000 people nationwide , including over 23,000 in California , are currently awaiting transplants, with an average of 17 individuals dying each day while waiting. The need is particularly urgent in Hispanic, Latino, and African American communities. One donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and heal more than 75 others through tissue donation.
Last year alone, more than 46,000 lives were saved by organ donors. Individuals of any age or medical condition may register, and doing so does not impact the quality of emergency medical care they receive. Ca lifornians can register online, through the Department of Motor Vehicles when applying for or renewing a driver’s license or ID, or learn more about living kidney donation through designated state resources.
