SUBJECT: Proclamation Proclaiming April 2026 as “Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month”
The City Council will present a proclamation proclaiming April 2026 as “Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month” in the City of Santa Maria.
BACKGROUND:
Child abuse and sexual assault remain critical issues that threaten the health, safety, and well-being of communities across the nation, impacting individuals and families of every background. The effects of sexual violence and child abuse are profound and long-lasting, often resulting in enduring emotional trauma and physical harm. National statistics indicate that one in four girls and one in six boys will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18, underscoring the urgent need for prevention and early intervention efforts.
Locally, Child Welfare Services investigated 3,927 cases in North County, including 2,811 in the Santa Maria area, with 160 unique allegations of sexual abuse, reflecting the seriousness of this issue within our own community. Effective prevention and response require strong partnerships among social serv ice agencies, schools, faith -based organizations, law enforcement, businesses, and engaged community members. By increasing education, awareness, and community involvement, we can better support survivors, strengthen families, and work collectively to prev ent future abuse, ensuring a safer and healthier community for all.
