TO: Mayor and City Council

FROM: David W. Rowlands, City Manager

DATE: May 5, 2026

SUBJECT: Proclamation Proclaiming May 7, 2026, as “National Day of Prayer”.

The City Council will present a Proclamation proclaiming May 7, 2026, as “National Day of Prayer” in the City of Santa Maria and encourage people of all faiths to participate in the “Day of Prayer” according to their own traditions.

BACKGROUND:

National Day of Prayer recognizes the longstanding tradition of Americans praying for the nation, from the Founding Fathers to modern -day Presidential proclamations inviting citizens to seek God’s guidance. Established by the First Continental Congress in 1775 and formally recognized into law in 1952 (amended in 1988), it is observed each year on the first Thursday of May. This year, Santa Maria's 29th Annual National Day of Prayer will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, with the theme, “Glorify God among the nations – Seeking Him in all generations.” The Santa Maria Com munity of Prayer will host two gatherings: the first at the Veterans Memorial Center, 313 W. Tunnell St., from 12:00 to 1:00 PM, and the second at the Healing Rooms of the Santa Maria Valley, 3010 Skyway Drive #C, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, with bag check -in beginning at 5:00 PM. Citizens are encouraged to unite in personal and public prayer, offering praise, repentance, love, and intercession for the nation and community.
