COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT

TO: Mayor and City Council

FROM: David W. Rowlands, City Manager

DATE: June 2, 2026

SUBJECT: Proclamation Proclaiming June 2026 as “Pride Month”

City Council will present a Proclamation proclaiming June 2026 as “Pride Month” in the City of Santa Maria.

BACKGROUND:

In the movement toward equal rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and more (LGBTQ+) persons, a historic turning point occurred on June 28, 1969, in New York City, with the onset of the Stonewall Riots. LGBTQ+ citizens rose and fought against the discriminatory criminal laws that have since been declared unconstitutional. Pride celebrations take place around the country every June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, and 2026 marks the 57th Anniversary celebration of this pivotal moment in time.

This Proclamation is being brought forward as the City of Santa Maria has a diverse Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and more community, and is committed to supporting visibility, dignity, and equity for all people.

Proclamation Requested by: Suzette Lopez Boren, Executive Director of House of Pride and Equality (HOPE)
