SUBJECT: Adoption of a Resolution Approving A lexander “Alex” Posada as Eligible for Naming Consideration of a City Park or Facility
Description:
The City Council consider adopting a Resolution approving the naming of a City facility in honor of Alexander “Alex” Posada.
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a Resolution approving the placement of Alexander “Alex” Posada on the City’s eligibility/resource list for future park, trail, and facility naming consideration.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Santa Maria maintains an eligibility/resource list of individuals whose contributions to the Santa Maria Valley may merit consideration for future naming of City parks, facilities, trails, and other recreational assets. Placement on this list does not name a specific facility, park, or trail, but instead identifies individuals whose service and contributions may warrant future consi deration under the City’s established naming process.
The City’s facility naming criteria provide that individuals considered for such recognition should demonstrate meaningful contributions in one or more of the following areas:
leadership in community affairs, community volunteerism, role model/mentor for others, and/or community enrichment.
The Recreation and Parks Commission is authorized to receive community input and make recommendations to the City Council regarding individuals for inclusion on t he eligibility/resource list. At its regular meeting on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the Recreation and Parks Commission considered this matter and approved a recommendation that Alexander “Alex” Posada be placed on the City’s eligibility/resource list for future naming consideration.
DISCUSSION:
Based on staff review and application of the City’s naming criteria, Alexander “Alex” Posada meets multiple categories for nomination, including leadership in community affairs, community volunteerism, service as a role model and mentor, and contributions 2 to community enrichment. Mr. Posada has demonstrated sustained leadership and service benefiting the Santa Maria community.
The action before the City Council is limited to whether Mr. Posada should be added to the City’s eligibility/resource list. Approval of this item would not designate or approve the naming of any specific park, trail, facility, or other recreational asset. Any future naming action would be evaluated separately and would require additional review and approval in accordance with City policy.
Alternative(s)
The City Council has the following alternatives:
Adopt the Resolution approving the placement of Alexander “Alex” Posada on the City’s eligibility/resource list for future park, trail, and facility naming consideration.
Decline to adopt the Resolution, thereby not adding Mr. Posada to the eligibility/resource list at this time.
Provide alternative direction to staff, including referring the matter back for additional review or requesting further information prior to taking action.
Fiscal Considerations
There is no fiscal impact associated with adding an individual to the eligibility/resource list. Any future naming action would be evaluated separately at the time of consideration.
Impact on the Community
Approval of this item re cognizes Alexander “Alex” Posada’s significant contributions to the Santa Maria community by placing his name on the City’s eligibility/resource list for future park, trail, and facility naming consideration. This action supports the City’s established pro cess for acknowledging individuals whose leadership, volunteerism, mentorship, and community enrichment have had a positive impact on residents.
