SUBJECT: Proclamation Proclaiming July as “Recreation and Parks Month”
The City Council will p resent a Proclamation proclaiming July 2026 as “Recreation and Parks Month” in the City of Santa Maria.
BACKGROUND:
Recreation and Parks Month is celebrated each July to recognize the essential role that recreation programs, parks, facilities, open spaces, and community services play in building healthy, connected, and resilient communities. The national observance bega n in 1985 through the National Recreation and Park Association as a way to promote the value of parks and recreation in community health, wellness, conservation, social connection, and quality of life. In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing the importance of park and recreation facilities and expressing support for designating July as National Park and Recreation Month. Each year, agencies throughout the country celebrate the month through summer programs, special events, community activities, contests, commemorations, and public recognition of the professionals, seasonal staff, part-time employees, volunteers, instructors, coaches, and community partners who support local parks and recreation services.
DISCUSSION:
The City Council is being asked to present a proclamation proclaiming July 2026 as “Recreation and Parks Month” in the City of Santa Maria. This proclamation provides an opportunity to highlight the important role recreation programs, parks, facilities, public art, special events, and open spaces play in supporting the health, wellness, and quality of life of Santa Maria residents.
