Mayor Himmelrich, Councilmembers:

I want to add my voice to the chorus of hundreds who have asked that you vote against putting Item 11A on the ballot. Please vote no on 11A. 11A is in direct competition with and could kill the people’s initiative in Item 11D.

More than 10,000 Santa Monica voters have said that they want to tax extremely high-value real estate in order to subsidize rent burdened low-income Santa Monicans to keep them from becoming homeless, to build more affordable housing for our local work force, and to continue to guarantee high quality schools even if Malibu takes its money and runs. I strongly support Item 11D. I know you will be voting yes on it but I hope you will do so enthusiastically and that you will enthusiastically support the measure since you will be helping so many of your constituents by doing so.

Right now you will also have the opportunity to help many of the tenants of Santa Monica by voting yes on Item 11B. You can also place a 3% cap on general adjustments to the maximum allowable rents, in addition to the other components of Item 11B.

You have a rare opportunity to be heroes to thousands of struggling Santa Monicans in this very scary moment of uncertainty. Please vote no on Item 11A. Please vote yes on Item 11B and yes on Item 11D.

Thank you,
Patricia Hoffman.

Please adopt this and support it fully. We have a State that does not care much about poor people or seniors
and is providing just about nothing to help them in the way of housing.

We cannot afford to allow the developers and SMF/ Abundant Housing to co‐op this truth to result in the entire City being covered in market rate housing giving us only the mealsy 10% required affordable units. We must also support  the POD program and create other programs like it.

What a great program that is ..it's immediate and saves our landscape from the Chris Harding Ellis hammer.  Everyone bitches about the need to help these areas.but few offer effective solutions. This is jsut that and will be for a long time to come.

Thank you,
Danielle Charney

Subject: input for 11A & 11D on the 7/12 City council agenda

EXTERNAL
Dear City Council Members,
I’m writing to you on behalf of the steering committee of Committee For Racial Justice (CRJ) about tonight’s Council agenda items 11A and 11D.

We see 11A as a “copy cat” effort, that some people call the developers’ initiative, as an attempt to thwart and replace the citizens’ initiative referenced in 11D (which provides housing support to keep people from being forced out of Santa Monica – many of whom are people of color ‐  and provides funds for building housing that more people can afford, as well as support for our schools).

We oppose, not only the lack of specificity in the “laundry list” (designed to sound appealing) of things that might be funded by 11A, but also the fact that all funds go into the City's general fund for the council to direct how they are spent.  In addition, not only is 11A designed to raise less money than 11D, the exemptions are designed to protect numerous large money transactions that benefit the wealthy (who will still do very well in those transactions).

CRJ and many other people in Santa Monica have long held concerns about the lack of affordable housing in our city.  We know that what is called “affordable” is not a real possibility for a number of our community members at the moment.  We want to maintain and improve the rich diversity of people who call Santa Monica home.  We urge you to vote NO on the cynical attempt embedded in 11A to tailor the transfer tax concept to protect wealth interests.  This transfer tax  is a concept first introduced by the petitions, signed by thousands of our neighbors, that are now represented in item 11D tonight .

We urge you to certify the Qualified Initiative of a well thought out and comprehensive  plan to help more people in our community to stay housed by voting YES on 11D.

These discussions tonight will reflect the priorities and justice & inclusion concerns of our city and we hope that its citizens will be well served by your decisions.

On behalf of Committee For Racial Justice Steering Committee, Joanne Berlin, Coordinator
