EXTERNAL
Jonathan Mann,
On Tuesday, August 23rd, the SMPOA & Firefighters Local 1109 are conducting the interviews separately, but in tandem, so a 20 minute session with one association will be followed by a 20 minute session with the other association.
Please schedule me at 10:40a‐11:00am with Firefighters Local 1109 and 11:00‐11:20 am with Santa Monica Police Officers' Association.
My questions and comments for SMPD which I am copying citywide and the Santa Monica Police Officers' Association shares with the rank and file street cops, are:
1. The community is angry; we understand why criminals were released during Covid and they aren't being prosecuted, so why not bring in more resources; the Sheriff in with his kick ass culture? Defunding the police and coddling criminals only perpetuates the cycle. No More Mr. Nice guy, it doesn't work!
2. Our parks and public places should not be infested with street thugs who are free to commit misdemeanor crimes without consequence. Our compassionate culture has gone too far, while unhoused who have been displaced by gentrification are falling through the cracks. My own brother is one.
3. Considering the amount of crime we are experiencing in Santa Monica why are we scheduling our police officers 3 day work weeks; is it because the Santa Monica Police Officers' Association was being rewarded for endorsing incumbents and special interest candidates?
4. Would not be it better for our police officers to work shorter days to avoid fatigue, especially if senior officers are picking up overtime which could be better put toward hiring more rookies who would earn less to cover high crime areas 24/7/365?

2 5. I was a parole officer and probation officer in the 70s and 80s. If any of my parolee were arrested, even for shoplifting, I would violate them immediately. If they were using, I gave them a choice between Synanon or jail.
6. When I was in law enforcement I already knew that street crime is largely drug related, it's much worse now with Fentanyl and Meth addicts who don't care who they hurt or kill. They need to be locked up where they are forced to detox and the guards are prosecuted if they provide cell phones or drugs to the inmates.
7. I support private prisons but the way they are managed is by exploiting prisoners; slave labor. America should be past chain gangs. Prisoners should receive minimum wage, with bonuses for meeting quota, more for fire fighting. They should also have to pay restitution.
Please let me know which time combination works best with your schedule.
