Subject: Personnel Board Vacancy
Dear Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem and Members of the City Council: I am the Chair of the Personnel Board. Our Vice Chair recently tendered her resignation, and it is my understanding that a new appointment is on the agenda for the October City Council meeting. I request that the Council postpone appointing a new member until the November meeting. That will give the Personnel Board and the Chief People Officer Lori Gentles an opportunity to do outreach, which in the past has led to the appointment of well qualified candidates. As you know from your consideration of proposition PB that is on the ballot, securing applicants for the Personnel Board has been a challenge. As of today, there is only one applicant of record for the Personnel Board.
Unfortunately, despite his qualifications, I do not believe he would be found to be eligible because he is an attorney at the law firm that represents the City before the Personnel Board at hearings. For all the foregoing reasons, I request that the Council postpone consideration of an appointment to the Board until the November meeting.
Thank you for your consideration of this request.
Elliot Gordon
Chair, Personnel Board
