Council Members,
David Hopkins has been Santa Monica resident for 23 years. He is a local businessman, an educator and community volunteer. With this letter, I am asking, for the benefit of all stakeholders, David Hopkins be appointed Airport Commissioner.
Since 2014, David has attended Santa Monica Airport Commission meetings. He has attended more meetings than most Airport Commissioners, and, he has consistently submitted a chit and spoken, at least three times, at each meeting. He has been respectful and polite and earned respect from City Staff, all past and all current Airport Commissioners.
As an active FAA Licensed Air Transport Pilot (ATP), with flight instructor ratings, David has more than 5,000 hours, flown over 41 years of flying. This is an invaluable amount of expertise, that is a huge asset to any organization. He is an active pilot, aviation businessman and with an ATP rating, he has the qualifications of an airline pilot.
David as volunteered his time to assist in the safe transit of medical patients, working with Santa Monica based Angel Flight.
He has given his time to assist Military Personal with the USO and help Heal the Bay protect our coastal waters. He has worked with the Santa Monica Red Cross running drills for disaster planning.
Historically, the Airport Commission has consisted of members selected by Zina Josephs. The result, the Airport Commission has been unqualified and ineffective in accomplishing anything of value and has never addressed anything related to safety. How can they address aviation safety with zero aviation experience? The last Airport Commission meeting had only three commissioners show up and nothing was accomplished.
For Santa Monica to have an effective and relevant government, we need skilled and experienced people who care to participate. David is a reasonable and fair man. He is also more qualified than any member of the airport commission in more than twenty years.
Please appoint David Hopkins to the airport commission.

The historic Santa Monica Airport as a general aviation airport is a valuable & essential resource to our community, available for all to use, provides emergency and disaster relief services to the entire Westside community & provides STEM education careers & opportunities for generations to come. It also provides a 4 mile airspace protection from overdevelopment in an overdense area & protects Santa Monica residents from LAX jet traffic.
Historically, the Airport Commission members have been unqualified and ineffective in accomplishing value driven aviation missions and haven't been capable of addressing aviation safety. We need Airport Commissioners who understand the technical aspects of airport operations, its businesses & users.
David is a qualified, reasonable and fair man. Please appoint David Hopkins to the airport commission.
