Subject: Item 3J.Tomorrow’s Council Meeting
EXTERNAL
Item 3J at tomorrow’s Council meeting involves an assignment of a lease at the Pier by Greg Morena and a related entity, and an extension of its term. It is reasonable to assume that the current tenant is receiving consideration from the purchaser.
Greg resigned his seat on the Council so he or his entity, as tenant, could negotiate the receipt from the City of substantial concessions based on Covid losses. In Item 3A Tuesday, Council is considering payments, possibly in 9 figures , to victims of the PAL child abuse events. Many such other cases in addition are pending and others will become known to the City for the first time in the next several months. The liabilities are enormously damaging in this era of fiscal troubles and reductions of vital services.
Therefore, I strongly urge that you, Council, and the City Manager and Attorney condition your approval of the requested transaction with the City recovering from the assignor all or much of the rent and /or other relief given to it previously .Greg has certainly contributed much to Santa Monica, but that fact should not affect what is a logical, equitable and much needed benefit to our City’s dire financial situation.
Sincerely, Stan Epstein
