Santa Monica City Council
1685 Main Street
Santa Monica, CA 90401
Dear Mayor Davis and Members of the Santa Monica City Council:
The Santa Monica Commission on Sustainability, Environmental Justice, and the Environment after being briefed on updates from the Resource Recovery and Recycling program in our January 23rd Commission meeting, would like to strongly recommend to Council the continued support of the 2030 Zero Waste Goals and Mandatory Recycling Program.
Recognizing that Santa Monica is a national leader in municipal policy on sustainability, and that becoming a zero waste community is of the utmost importance for the future of the environment, a clean city, tourism and for the health of all City residents and visitors, we highly recommend that City Council act aggressively and proactively to help ensure we continue to meet our zero waste goals.
Continuing to build on the achievements that the Resource Recovery and Recycling program (RRR) has already accomplished, and the need for continued financial support to increase these efforts, we are enthusiastic about reviewing the outcomes of the new rate study that will be further refined in your Feb. 28th study session. The Commission hopes to encourage Council to make the zero waste goals and plan a “north star” by which the City continues to demonstrate its ability to innovate strategies for reducing waste and commitment to the environment. It is our advice that the Council keep these considerations in mind as you work through the current rates study and budgets to fund the RRR program as a means of showing strong leadership and commitment to the current and future sustainability of Santa Monica.
Sincerely,
Alexandra Sokol Alexandra Tower
