Dear Mayor Davis, Mayor Pro Tem Negrete, and Honorable Council Members, At the July 20, 2023, DTSM, Inc. Board of Directors meeting, the DTSM, Inc. Board unanimously supported the proposed interim zoning ordinance to promote economic recovery in the City’s Downtown Districts, including the Third Street Promenade Area. Earlier zoning amendments have been critical to the economic recovery efforts in Downtown Santa Monica.
DTSM, Inc. asks the Santa Monica City Council to support the City staff recommendation for this agenda item (10.B) at the Council meeting on July 25, 2023.
The DTSM, Inc. Board believes that the proposed amendments will continue the City’s economic recovery goals and support the City’s efforts to be flexible and innovative in attracting businesses to Downtown.
These amendments will encourage entertainment and nightlife uses to choose the Third Street Promenade Area District, and loosened alcohol restrictions will enable our businesses to benefit from an important economic driver.
Allowing the Director of Community Development to consider commercial uses not clearly defined in the Zoning Code, and extending the number of days covered by Temporary Use Permits, will ensure exciting new uses can join our Downtown and have the greatest chance of success. We also appreciate the inclusion of amendments to activate the rooftops of our Downtown parking structures, and we look forward to welcoming an outdoor cinema concept to the rooftop of Parking Structure 6.
For the reasons listed above, DTSM, Inc. supports the proposed interim zoning ordinance to promote economic recovery and encourages you to support the City staff recommendations.
Sincerely,
Andrew Thomas, CEO, Downtown Santa Monica, Inc.
