Subject: Support for Agenda Item 10 E ordinance related to firearms

EXTERNAL
Dear Santa Monica City Council,
The Los Angeles Chapter of Brady United to Prevent Gun Violence strongly urges your support for the ordinance to regulate firearms. We know that strong gun laws save lives. California has the strongest firearm laws in the nation and they are making a difference. In 1993, the firearm mortality rate peaked in California and in the rest of the nation. As firearm death rates rose, California began passing gun safety laws and has continued to do so. As the laws took effect, California’s firearm mortality rate declined steeply. By 2019, the firearm mortality rate in California had declined by 59 percent.

Dear Santa Monica City Council,
The gun ordinance to regulate firearm sales on the city as drafted is fair and tough. Strong gun laws save lives. Thank you in advance for approving the ordinance.

Subject: City Council Meeting 8/22/2023: Public Input in support of 10B Importance: High

EXTERNAL
Dear Council Members of the City of Santa Monica City Council, As an organization committed to promoting the safety and well‐being of our communities, WoMen Against Gun Violence firmly believes that firearm safety laws save lives and create a safer environment for all.  That is why we strongly support the proposed ordinance amending Santa Monica Municipal Code Chapter 3.24 to regulate retail firearm sales, establish additional firearm owner responsibilities, restrict weapon usage on City‐ owned property and other locations, establish a voluntary commitment program, and ban non‐serialized (ghost guns) firearms in the City.

The frequency and severity of gun‐related deaths are deeply troubling. In 2021, approximately 49,000 Americans died as a result of gun violence –– and gun violence is now the leading cause of death for children in our country. The impact of this violence reverberates through families, schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods, leaving a trail of tragedy in their wake. It is our collective responsibility to address this issue with urgency and determination.

We appreciate your bold action that will not only help keep Santa Monica residents and visitors safe from gun violence but will also benefit and inspire nearby communities.

Respectfully,
