I also want to note that critique of the military operations of the state of Israel are not presumptively antisemitic, and that indeed such claims erase and undermine the vast number of Jewish organizers and activists agitating for a permanent ceasefire in the region. If this is a concern of yours, I encourage you to consider the platforms of organizations like Jewish Voice for Peace. It is dangerous to conflate the critique of wanton state-inflicted violence with hate speech.
Thank you once more for your consideration, and please do vote yes on item 16D.

Hello,
I am a Santa Monica resident writing to voice my support for the ceasefire resolution, item 16D.
There is robust public support for the US to broker a ceasefire, with recent polling showing 67% of all voters and 77% of democrats in support. Despite these compelling majorities, the federal government is not heeding the call of its constituents, and people of conscience all over the country are turning to their local governments to amplify their calls for peace and justice.
Every day, the tax dollars of Santa Monicans are being used to fund the massacre of civilian men, women and children in Palestine and every dollar spent on a foreign war is a dollar that cannot be spent at home, funding public benefits for your constituents. The ICJ has ruled that “immediate and effective measures” must be taken to protect Palestinians but the US continues to support Israeli violence.
I would also like to address the idea that supporting a ceasefire is antisemitic. Criticism of the military actions of the state of Israel is not the same as antisemitism, and those who imply that it is homogenize the diverse political beliefs of all Jewish people at home and abroad. I have learned so much in my own life from Jewish friends, family and community members who loudly refuse the idea that they deserve a homeland at the expense of someone else’s, or that their liberation is dependent on someone else’s subjugation. I am proud to be working alongside Jewish organizers and community members to support a ceasefire, as continued violence will never make anyone safer.
Thank you,
Alexandra Anemone

I am writing to urge the City of Santa Monica to take a MUCH STRONGER stand for a permanent ceasefire.
Key points that should be in our City's resolution are:
-Renewal of funding for the United Nations Relief & Works Agency (UNRWA); -Unrestricted entry of humanitarian assistance including food, water, electricity, and medical aid; -Cessation of US military assistance
-Release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
I know we're a small city in California but we need to stand on the right side of history on this. The war in Gaza is horrific and must be stopped. Our city needs to go on record in opposition to military "resolution" and in support of a humanitarian solution.
Sincerely,
Sylvia Gentile

My parents were Jewish Holocaust survivors and I was born in Berlin, Germany. We emigrated to the US when I was 2. I have been a resident of Santa Monica several times since the 1970s. I now reside in Venice.
I beseech the Council to support a Resolution to cease the horrors being perpetrated in Gaza. The exemplary City of Santa Monica must join the outcry of other cities around the country against the massacre.
Please do not conflate anti-semitism with a call for a ceasefire. The leadership in Israel does not represent the sentiment of the Jewish people. Thank you.

My maternal grandparents, who were Jewish immigrants from Poland, bought a home in Santa Monica in 1929. My grandmother lived here until her death in 1965 and I moved here in 1977. I was a co-founder of Community Corporation of Santa Monica and served on the City's Housing Committee in the 1990s.
I have worked with the Palestinian and Muslim community in Southern California since 2001 and have made a number of trips to Israel and the West Bank. I have friends in both places.
Across the U.S. at least 100 cities have passed ceasefire resolutions, 30 of these cities are in California and include Pasadena, Alhambra and many others.
Why should U.S. cities concern themselves with this war? First, U.S. citizens have families in both Gaza and Israel. The U.S. government is playing a major role in this struggle, providing arms, ammunition, aircraft and intelligence to the Israelis as well as political support at the United Nations and the International Court of Justice all at the expense of U.S. taxpayers. U.S. provision of arms and intelligence have not led to a peaceful resolution of conflict, instead more than 45,000 people in Gaza, Item 16-D

Dear Mayor and Councilmembers;
The war on Gaza threatens to expand into a wider war, which would make Israelis less safe and could cause terrible impacts to the general economy and to tourism even affecting Santa Monica. It has already done devastating harm to 14,000 Palestinian children in addition to the 700 or 800 Israeli civilians killed.
I grew up in Santa Monica, attended Roosevelt Elementary, John Adams Jr Hi and Santa Monica High School. Many businesses I regularly patronize, parks, the church I attend and friends are still in Santa Monica. It remains a city I have a lot of affection for.

EXTERNAL
I am respectfully requesting all Santa Monica City Council members to vote YES on Resolution Number 16 D at the May 14 City Council Meeting in support of an immediate negotiated bilateral ceasefire in GAZA.
As a Santa Monica resident for thirty six years, I'm asking you to summon the moral and political courage necessary to Vote YES to stop the carnage being visited upon the Palestinian People, daily for the last seven months.
On May 7, 2024 HAMAS agreed to a ceasefire and exchange of prisoners. Qatar, Egypt, the United States, and The United Nations were guarantors of the agreement.
Israel rejected that ceasefire offer.
On May 7, 2024 Israel closed the Rafah border and began a ground invasion of the tent city where 1.6 million displaced children, women, and civilian men are trapped in a tent city, starving, wounded, with no water, and no sanitation facilities. Israel, armed with a steady supply of bombs from the United States, has destroyed their homes, schools, libraries, hospitals, and places of worship.
Extended family members have been buried alive in their bombed homes. Now mass graves are being found near destroyed hospitals with horrifying evidence of torture.
With the exception of October 7, 2023 when HAMAS fighters temporarily breached the separation wall, Israel, as an occupying military power, has had total control of the lives of 2.3 million people in GAZA. That is how Israel, on October 8, 2023 was able to cut off all water, food, medicine, and power to GAZA. For seven months Israel has bombed, starved, and terrorized the population, forcing survivors to the Rafah border with no hope of escape.

Subject: Stop the Bombing in Gaza; Vote for a Ceasefire
EXTERNAL
Dear Santa Monica City Councilmembers:
Many times I have asked myself how it is possible that thousands of defenseless Gazans have been and continue to be slaughtered by bombs and munitions purchased with my tax dollars. How in the 21st Century can a “manmade famine” be imposed? As elected officials you have an opportunity to stand-up on behalf of the bombarded civilians of Gaza and demand a ceasefire – to say to them, “you have a right to not suffer hunger and famine, to not die of deprivation and to not watch loved ones be buried in rubble.” It is not everyday an elected official has an opportunity to make decisions of such consequence.
Knowing full well the difficulty Israel has justifying the bombing of Rafah, it pulls out all the stops to convince the world that it is necessary to bomb a city where more than a million civilians are sheltering. President Biden disagrees with Israel and is no longer supporting an invasion of Rafah, telling Associated Press that he would not supply offensive weapons in an all-out assault over concern for the well-being of the civilians sheltering there. Moreover, two thirds of American voters are demanding a ceasefire. Majorities of Democrats (77%), Independents (69%), and Republicans (56%) — support the U.S. calling for a permanent ceasefire and a deescalation of violence in Gaza. Humanitarian agencies, human rights groups, United Nations officials, and more than 153 member states have called for an immediate ceasefire. Stand with majorities of American voters and the rest of the world. Vote for a ceasefire.
I am a Jewish American with longstanding ties to Santa Monica. My four grandparents fled pogroms in Eastern Europe. For many years I defended immigrants and asylum-seekers against deportation. I am now retired. When it comes to analyzing and reaching conclusions about the important issues of our time, I try to be guided by facts, logic, morality, and compassion. I hope you will too.
Thank you.

I am a Jewish Santa Monica resident of 36 years and support the resoluƟon which Council members Jesse Zwick, Caroline Torosis and Gleam Davis created and published as Item #16 on the May 14th Agenda.
I know that some of the City Council members are mainly concerned about Hamas killing people and taking hostages as prisoners. BUT THAT IS ADDRESSED IN THE FIRST PARAGRAPH OF THE RESOLUTION! Remember when the first group of hostages were released on Nov 25, 2023, THERE WAS A CEASEFIRE FIRST! So, why would some City Council members object to having a ceasefire first now so that the hostages can be released? And why would some City Council members object to the need to get humanitarian aid to the PalesƟnians? As you know, there are negoƟaƟons happening now with Qatar, Egypt, Israel, Hamas, the UN etc. They have hammered out a 3 stage resoluƟon in regards to a ceasefire and release of the hostages. Hamas has agreed to this and, hopefully, Israel will agree as well.
So, why can’t all the City Council members endorse the resoluƟon, and join the over 100 City Councils around the country who have endorsed their own resoluƟons?

I am in full support of the excellent resoluƟon that has been craŌed, to not only call for a Cease Fire to relieve the suffering and starvaƟon in Gaza, but also to condemn the ugly anƟ-SemiƟsm that is brewing as a result of this war’s conduct by the current government of Israel, which is not in any way connected to Jewish culture and religion, only to an erroneous aƩempt to secure a geopoliƟcal goal that is in fact being undermined: Israel as a safe haven for Jewish values and culture. I support is condemnaƟon of the Islamophobia that is also erupƟng when some in this naƟon act is if being anƟ-war, anƟ-violence, and pro-internaƟonal law is a “pro-or-con” decision. I am a nonviolent pracƟƟoner. Some would say this is impracƟcal in geopoliƟcs but it is in fact, the only way forward for humanity. The war in Gaza is a terrible error and our federal government warned that it would be. Jews and non-Jews alike in our country are grieving over what happened on October 7 - and what that brutality by Hamas has wrought in response, ever since.
As a way to support, from afar, the many heroes of humanity who are opposing this violence, with the courage to imagine a beƩer future, this resoluƟon can help. It will join with many in our country and across the world who are commiƩed to seek that future beyond this horror.
It is very hard to live in these Ɵmes and enjoy life knowing that this human catastrophe is ongoing. The moral thing to do is join Jewish and non-Jewish voices pleading for an end to this brutality carried on by the current Israeli and current Hamas leadership. Only a poliƟcal soluƟon will bring peace, however difficult. SupporƟng the cease fire and condemning hate is the right acƟon for Santa Monica’s leadership to take.

Friends,
I have been a Santa Monica resident for more than 48 years. I am writing in support of the City of Santa Monica Ceasefire Resolution drafted by Council members Jesse Zwick, Caroline Torosis and Gleam Davis.
I have worked with Israelis and Palestinians committed to bringing peace to the region since the 1990’s. As General Secretary of the American Friends Service Committee, I oversaw peacebuilding efforts in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.
The current situation is devastating for Israelis with family and friends still being held hostage and for Gazas who have lost homes, family members, friends and are now facing starvation. A ceasefire and return of the hostages is a first, necessary step to alleviate the suffering of Israelis and Palestinians and open any possibility of bringing lasting peace to this volatile region.
I hope that Santa Monica City Council can add its voice to the call for peace. Please vote Yes on the Ceasefire Resolution.
