RE: 6/25/24 item 16-A: Appointment to Airport Commission The FOSP Board supports the re-appointment of Joe Pertel to the Airport Commission. He has done an outstanding job since he was appointed in 2022, and we look forward to his continued service on the Commission.

Joe’s dad was a Navy pilot, so he grew up around various Naval Air Stations in Florida, Virginia, Rhode Island, and Maine, where he developed an appreciation for military and civil aviation.

Joe has been a long-time Sunset Park resident and has raised his family here, serving on the SMMUSD Personnel Board and volunteering with various youth sports organizations. This has made him aware of the need for more open space, parks, and recreational facilities in our city.

With his many years of experience as an attorney, he understands FAA regulations, the 2017 Consent Decree, and the history of litigation involving the city and Santa Monica Airport. He is also aware of the safety and pollution impacts of past and current Airport operations on local residents.

Joe views the conversion of Santa Monica Airport to a great park, after the airport closes at the end of 2028, as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We believe that he will continue do an excellent job of analyzing options and representing community concerns as the planning process goes forward.

RE: 6/25/24 item 16-A: Appointment to Recreation and Parks Commission The FOSP Board supports the appointment of Nikki Kolhoff to the Recreation & Parks Commission.

Nikki has served on the FOSP Board since 2015, focusing on issues concerning Land Use and Education. With a biology degree from Yale Unversity, a law degree from USC, and professional expertise as a commercial finance lawyer, she excels at reviewing and analyzing complex documentation, assessing the financial impact of agreements and transactions, and looking at both capital and operating budgets.

These skills will be very useful to the Commission with regards to the Parks Needs Assessment, the budgets for creating and maintaining facilities and programs, and in reviewing the jurisdiction of various government agencies over our parks and open space.

With regard to current recreational programs and facilities, Nikki's two children have participated in swim team, Little League, AYSO, club soccer, club volleyball, after school CREST programs, and other community recreation programs.

And finally, we agree with Nikki's vision statement that, "It is essential to identify and protect our recreational and open spaces now, because once these space spaces are developed, they will be lost to resident use forever.

Again, the FOSP Board supports the appointment of Nikki Kolhoff to the Recreation and Parks Commission.

I currently serve as Chair of the Santa Monica Arts Commission and am reaching out to provide the highest of recommendations for current Vice Chair Laurie Yehia, who has submitted her application for a third and final term. I have worked with Laurie for the entirety of my time on the commission. From the first meeting I attended, Laurie has been an integral leader on the commission. She always generously shares her insight, unique perspective and level headedness to every conversation -- both on the full commission, as well as in the multiple committees on which she sits. 9 Laurie these past three years while I served as Vice Chair and Chair and Laurie as Committee Chair of the Public Arts Committee and Vice Chair of the commission.

Laurie is that rare individual who has a seemingly perfect balance of left brain/right brain attributes. She is a practicing artist who has also been a practicing attorney, organizational expert and leadership development consultant. Laurie shares her knowledge, is always open to new ideas, is a creative problem solver, a calming influence and just a lovely person to be around who provides all of the above to the commission. I am personally extremely grateful that Laurie has submitted an application for a third term on the commission. As the Arts Commission continues to do its regular work and begins to find its way in reaching out to Santa Monicans and increasing art in the city, Laurie plays a crucial role in maintaining “history” on the commission as a new generation of commissioners get their bearing and build their own experience on the commission. Laurie provides key leadership and I very much appreciate her decision to reapply/remain on the board for another term so she and I can help develop others on the commission to rotate into leadership positions in the next year or two.

I am writing this email to support Jaleh Mirhashemi for appointment to the Recreation and Parks Commission. Jaleh is a very involved resident of Santa Monica and is passionate about open space, playing fields and recreation. She was one of the people who in the end was responsible for pushing Belmar Field across the finish line. She is very hard working and would make an excellent addition to this commission. She has worked with the commission over the years so she will be able to hit the ground running.
