I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Jain in 2022 in the Los Angeles County Master Gardener program. What drew me to her was her intense interest in bettering the community through active volunteerism, advocating for the voiceless, and creating meaningful change through works.
The past three years I have been working to create an agriculture pathway that provides a free college pathway for inner city Title I students in south east Los Angeles. I was burning out trying to make connections, write the curriculum, and find the right partners to complete the project. Dr. Jain listened to me and to my surprise offered to help. Dr. Jain connected me with the world of higher learning. Thanks to Dr. Jain’s invaluable advice and efforts, we petitioned Long Beach City College’s (LBCC) horticulture program who agreed to open remote campuses at local high schools. LBCC also agreed to provide board of regent certified college classes to the students at no cost to them. Dr. Jain also connected the program to the University of California, Los Angeles expanding the educational options of students who rarely considered attending college due to cost and general lack of support. It is thanks to Dr. Jain that the program has grown to a full college pathway today.
The fact that Dr. Jain volunteered countless hours to assist a program of students she did not know speaks volumes of her dedication and character. Dr. Jain represents bright eyed ideas and advice that would be invaluable to any commission. I whole-heartedly recommend her to the city of Santa Monica Art Commission.
