Subject: Stop Irresponsible Development 1217 Euclid / 1211-1217 14thth street People thought they voted for City Council members to protect the residents of Santa Monica. Mayor Brocks recent comments in the SMDP were shameful. He is rolling over for the BIG developers and is not fighting for our community. He is allowing the un-elected, City, State and Federal Bureaucrats to dictate the future of Santa Monica to implement phony, arbitrary regulations to strangle its citizenry.

Mayor Brock noted we need to work with developers to co-exist, just follow our rules. At the recent meeting at St. Anne’s (NOTE: NO City Council Member attended) where HCHC Architect Kevin Daly felt he was being disrespected by the neighbors attending the meeting. DISREPECTED ARE THE PEOPLE YOU TOLD TO “SHUT UP” AND SWALLOW THESE HORRID PLANS WITH NO COMMUNITY INPUT which started in 2020! You would not allow for general comments, your plan was to split the attendees into small groups so that you can divide and conquer the community. You plan to RUIN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND OUR LIVES. You have WEAK, WEAK, WEAK Security plans. Were you really surprised we are outraged no one wants a mental institution with lack security in the once quiet neighborhood? Isn’t it enough the people of Santa Monica have to walk over dozens of homeless people of all kinds within a few block of your home to get to the post office or Vons? I love the fact that the Developers provide plenty of money to the City funds to implement their genius plans.

There is no diversity in City Council, you all think a like and you are all benefiting from the destruction and over development of a once beautiful beach city.

HCHC is still confused as they do not have any idea on how to resolve the lack of parking? Have they ever seen the lots completely full on most days? They don’t understand how come there is little use of the parking at night. (Oh what a waste to them $) The city will not let residence park in the lots overnight, otherwise they would be full.

How about placing meter parking around the perimeter of all buildings. You can do it. You should have asked us before you built the plans. It won’t replace the 100 metered spots we are losing, but it would be helpful to have something, anything!

2 Regarding the out of scale height of the building for this older neighborhood of 2 & 3 story buildings. It would be joyful to have the 1217 Euclid property be cut down to 2 or 3 stories. We can all then share the sunlight and cool breezes. Finally, how about moving the below grade garage entrance and gate to the Euclid Street side and not the alley. This will cut down on the noise from the gate opening and closing all night where existing neighbor’s bedroom back up to property. Euclid side does not have bedrooms.

I hope you listen to the residents of Santa Monica. You are rolling all over us to transform the city into an image for yourself. Don’t forget to celebrate your genius and give yourselves awards while the rest of us will be trying to survive a mental institution in a neighborhood where it does not belong.

1 Public Comments for Santa Monica City Council Meeting for Tuesday, July 23, 2024. Agenda Item #1 Public Input.

My name is David Hopkins, I am businessman, educator and instructor pilot at Santa Monica Airport. I have am a 25-year resident of Ocean Park, Santa Monica.

The next one hundred years of air transportation arrived at Santa Monica airport last week.

Firstly, low-cost air transport pioneer Southwest Airlines announced it is partnering with new-generation urban air mobility pioneer, Archer Aviation to launch vertical take-off and landing, air taxi services in California. Connecting to Southwest’s existing extensive California network, specifically quoting the route of Santa Monica to Napa as an example route where significant demand exists. 1 Archer
Aviation’s Midnight aircraft is electrically powered, offering quiet, clean air transport in and out from SMO, similar to what we enjoy with electric vehicles, now ubiquitous in Santa Monica. Here are the reasons to celebrate.

1.) 20 minutes to anywhere in the Los Angeles basin. Imagine that, no rush hour! And we have a fully operational airport to support these new services.

2.) Clean, quiet, sustainable air transport from our very own SMO.

3.) More reasons for businesses and visitors to choose our city over others.

Secondly, a small, two-seat, electric-powered training aircraft starting operations at our long-time SMO flight school, Proteus Aviation.2
Here are the reasons to
celebrate for this aircraft.

1. Almost silent operations outside of the airport boundary. Similar to EV’s.

2. Sustainable, all-electric engine and systems. Rechargeable batteries.

3. A career path for our young people. Did you know that airline and commercial pilots have medium annual salaries of $171,210 per year?3 The eventual career destination of many Proteus and other flight school alumni.

Offering our young people a career that they can launch from SMO and afford to live in the city.

2 4. Operating economics will eventually displace most all other gasolinepowered training and recreational aircraft from SMO.

Combined, the proposed Southwest Airlines/Archer Aviation partnership at SMO and the arrival of electric-powered training aircraft at SMO herald a quiet, clean and sustainable era of air mobility that will be a major benefit to the residents, businesses and many visitors to our fair city. Imagine...

5. Residents being anywhere in the LA basin in about 20 minutes where there is a local airport. There are around 20 such airports in the LA basin. In future, heliports and vertiports will significantly multiply the on/off ramps to LA’s airspace system.

6. Santa Monica businesses being able to extend their reach throughout the LA basin and beyond. Think real estate, professional services, entertainment and IT who can make customer and sales visits without being tied to surface congestion and unpredictability.

7. Visitors being able to quickly and reliably traverse the LA basin and all its attractions without the time and hassles of navigating unfamiliar freeways via a rental car or Rideshare
To test the attractiveness of the above ideas, speak with our Chamber of Commerce, Visitors Bureau, Hotel and hospitality industry. All these entities report that one of the least attractive parts of our city is the difficulty of moving around the LA Basin, rush hour traffic and the unpredictability of getting around roadways in general.

Perhaps the best news for the City of Santa Monica and it’s taxpayers, is no new investment will be required to support such an air transportation system, as private industry, utilities, State and Federal Governments have already invested to make such a system operational.

Lastly, based on the above arguments, I would strongly encourage City Council to Direct SMO Management to support the introduction of electric-powered air transportation through expedited approvals, where necessary and the future expedited provision of necessary infrastructure.

The future for the next one hundred years of air transport at SMO looks bright. ______________________
