RE: OBJECTION TO PROPOSED DIGITAL BILLBOARD AT 1202 3rd STREET PROMENADE Dear Members of the Santa Monica Planning Commission:
We are writing to express STRONG OPPOSITION to the proposed installation of an approximately 800 square foot LED digital display/electronic billboard at the city-designated landmark located at 1202 3rd Street Promenade.
While we understand the proposal includes plans for displaying artwork, civic announcements, and content promoting Santa Monica's history alongside paid advertising, the belief is this project would be detrimental to our community for the following reasons:
1. Preservation of Historic Character: The building at 1202 3rd Street Promenade is a designated city landmark. Installing a large, modern digital display would fundamentally alter the historic character and architectural integrity of this protected structure.
2. Light Pollution: An 800 square foot LED display wrapping around the corner of the building would create significant light pollution that could aƯect nearby residents, businesses, and the overall ambiance of the Third Street Promenade.
3. Visual Blight and Commercialization: The Third Street Promenade is valued for its pedestrian-friendly, human-scale environment. A large digital billboard would introduce an unnecessarily commercialized element that detracts from the area's charm.
4. Energy Consumption: Large LED displays consume substantial electricity, contradicting Santa Monica's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
5. Precedent Setting: Approving this project could set a troubling precedent, potentially leading to additional digital billboards throughout our historic districts and commercial areas.
6. Distraction to Drivers and Pedestrians: The full-motion display at this busy intersection could pose safety concerns by distracting drivers and pedestrians.
The Third Street Promenade is a treasured public space in our community. While we support eƯorts to promote local arts and culture, we think there are more appropriate ways to achieve these goals without compromising the historic character of our landmarks or introducing large-scale commercial advertising into our public realm.
We respectfully urge the Planning Commission to reject this proposal and to consider alternative approaches that would better serve our community's interests while respecting Santa Monica's unique character and historic resources.
Thank you for your consideration of this matter.

ITEM 4-I — PLEASE PULL FROM CONSENT AND MODIFY
Many of us worked for decades to get cannabis legalized.
Your own Council has struggled with social justice for cannabis retailers.
If you allow alcohol advertising on City property, please allow cannabis advertising as well.
Thanks,
Kevin
