Subject: Item 16A - Appointment of Council Liaison to Library Board Dear Mayor Negrete and Council Members,
On behalf of the Library Board, I would like to clairfy our request for a Council Liaison. Our original request from June, 2024 is attached to the 16 Item. At that time Council Member Parra volunteered to be the liaison. Since Ms. Parra did not run for re-election, she did not serve as liaison. We are renewing our request at this time and urge the Council Members to consider appointing a liaison who may gain a better understanding of the Library's contribution to our residents as well as the critical need for more funding.
We were hopeful that additional funding for the libraries would be included in the proposed FY 2025-27 budget in response to the outpouring of community support for Fairview Library in April of this year.
Supporters were asking not only to keep Fairview open, but to restore full service to both Fairview and Ocean Park branches, which are open with self-service only two days per week.
We overlook the contribution of libraries to the wellbeing and safety of our neighborhoods. They offer access and a safe place to go for all ages. Libraries address everyday needs for many segments of our community– information, programs, free technology. Our library staff partner with public safety personnel. Libraries are our trusted places and are uniquely positioned to reimagine public safety.
We welcome a Council Liaison to join with our board and staff to help restore our libraries as the anchor to the community and neighborhoods, and a dynamic space for learning, curiosity, and connection.
