Subject: RE: DEI Project Support - Demographic Self-Report Data No worries and thank you, Lisa!
I think it would make sense to determine demographic categories based on the intention behind the data collection. I’m assuming that the demographic data would be used internally to understand who is accessing services. If so, I think it’s important to make these survey questions accessible and inclusive without becoming a barrier to completing an application. For example, if specific demographics are not required for eligibility, perhaps there can be a “prefer not to say” option so that an individual can still apply without providing sensitive information. Perhaps the online form can also include an option to “skip” demographic questions if someone automatically qualifies due to high need (e.g., family experiencing homelessness, youth in foster system, etc.). This might increase efficiency in getting services to individuals with higher need who may be wary of complex forms.
When presenting the demographic categories, I would want to provide a statement explaining the reason or intention behind data collection. (I provided a few examples in my prior email, but a starting point could be: “We respect human diversity and understand that [sexual orientation and gender identity and expressions, or other applicable demographic data point] are sensitive and personal matters. To improve the effectiveness of our organization and ensure we address the needs of our [Santa Monica] community, please let us know the following demographic information.” (source))
