Meeting: June 23, 2026
16 ITEM BY COUNCILMEMBER DAN HALL AND MAYOR CAROLINE TOROSIS Request of Councilmember Hall and Mayor Torosis that Council approve use of $5,500 of discretionary funds to support summer programming with new equipment for the Recreation and Arts Department.
Summer is when our recreation and cultural spaces do their most visible work, and both our Recreation Division and Cultural Affairs Division have specific equipment requests that have been unfulfilled for several years due to tight budgets. The City’s Aquatics staff has long desired to purchase an inflatable floating volleyball court and net for recreational swim. The inflatable is a low-cost, high-use draw for open swim and special events at the Annenberg Beach House and Swim Center, expected to cost approximately $3,012.40 inclusive of tax and shipping.
At the Miles Memorial Playhouse, the first full year under City management since reopening has shown where the venue could improve: a working wireless microphone set is the single most requested item from renters, since the existing mics are aged and no longer functional. An additional two speaker monitors would raise our inventory to four monitors and gives the Miles the ability to serve musicians and dancers who cannot perform well without adequate speakers feeding back sound on stage. Together, the new equipment is expected to cost approximately $2,444.26.
In order to put these resources to work before and during the 2026 summer season, WE THEREFORE MOVE THAT THE COUNCIL:
1. Allocate $5,000 from Councilmember Hall’s share of Council discretionary funds and $500 from Mayor Torosis’ share of discretionary funds to the Recreation and Arts Department to fund purchasing of the above mentioned equipment. # # #
