Subject: City Council 6/23 item 16-A -- Airport Commission -- Support Diane Reynolds Dear Mayor Torosis and City Council members,
I write to wholeheartedly support the re-appointment of Diane Reynolds to the Airport Commission.

Diane has served ably on the Commission for 4 years and is currently the Chair.

I have attended many Airport Commission meetings and seen that Diane is always diligently prepared for the meetings and that she works generously, thoughtfully, collaboratively and effectively with her fellow Commissioners, with staff and with attendees.

I have also witnessed a coordinated effort on the part of several pilots who are determined to harass, intimidate and troll Diane and the other Commissioners in hopes of undermining their work. You are probably aware of who they are.

I hope that you will give Diane an opportunity to serve for 4 more more years on the Airport Commission as she is fair, committed and holds the community's interests at heart.

Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully,
Robert Brown

Subject: Agenda Item 16A, Airport Commission

EXTERNAL
Dear Mayor Torosis and Councilmembers:

In July 2025, the Council reconstituted the Downtown Santa Monica Board in part because it recognized that diverse perspectives lead to better decision-making and more effective advice to the City.

The Airport Commission would similarly benefit from greater diversity of viewpoints and expertise.

Currently, every Airport Commissioner supports, or is aligned with, a park-only vision for the airport's future. While that perspective deserves representation, it is not the only perspective held by residents, airport users, businesses, employees, and other stakeholders. A broader range of viewpoints would strengthen the Commission's ability to evaluate issues and advise Council.

Just as importantly, the Airport Commission currently has no member with aeronautical or aviation knowledge or expertise. Yet the Commission routinely considers issues involving airport operations, aviation safety, aircraft noise, environmental impacts, FAA regulations, and aviation policy. It is the highest costing advisory commission in the City.

Having at least one commissioner with aviation knowledge would help ensure these discussions are informed by technical expertise and operational realities and help reduce the cost of the commission.

This is not about whether one supports or opposes the airport's long-term future. So long as Santa Monica Airport remains operational, the City would benefit from having at least one commissioner with relevant aviation knowledge and experience.

Whether Council appoints me, David Hopkins, or Mark Smith, each of us would bring aviation knowledge that is currently absent from the Commission. Adding even one commissioner with aeronautical expertise would strengthen the Commission's deliberations and provide Council with more informed recommendations.

Thank you for your consideration and service to our community.

EXTERNAL
Dear Mayor Torosis and Councilmembers: Currently, the Airport Commission lacks a member with aeronautical experience or aviation expertise. Yet the Commission is routinely asked to consider issues involving aircraft operations, airport safety, noise, environmental impacts, FAA regulations, and aviation policy. Residents regularly raise concerns about aircraft noise and pollution, but there is presently no commissioner with the technical knowledge necessary to evaluate those claims, separate fact from misconception, or provide informed analysis. Appointing Eve Lopez, David Hopkins or Mark Smith, each of whom would bring a level of subject matter expertise that is currently absent from the Airport Commission and would help ensure that discussions involving aviation are informed by facts, data, and real world operational experience. Regardless of one’s views on the future of the airport, the Airport Commission and the public would benefit from having at least one commissioner with the knowledge and experience necessary to provide informed guidance on aviation matters for so long as the airport remains operational.

Thank you for your consideration.

Dear Mayor Torosis and Councilmembers: Currently, the Airport Commission lacks a member with aeronautical experience or aviation expertise. How amazing is that?? Yet the Commission is routinely asked to consider issues involving aircraft operations, airport safety, noise, environmental impacts, FAA regulations, and aviation policy.

Residents regularly raise concerns about aircraft noise and pollution, but there is presently no commissioner with the technical knowledge necessary to evaluate those claims, separate fact from misconception, or provide informed analysis. So instead we get results that are uniformed and wrong because they are not qualified and are "yes men".. who do as told. As an attorney, commercial pilot, certified flight instructor, FAA Safety Team Representative, volunteer humanitarian pilot, and active member of the local aviation and resident community, Eve Lopez would bring a level of subject matter expertise that is currently absent from the Airport Commission and would help ensure that discussions involving aviation are informed by facts, data, and real world operational experience. Dear Mayor Torosis and Council members,
We are sincerely asking you to appoint someone to the Airport Commission with actual experience, and there is no one better qualified than Eve Lopez. We need an in-house volunteer to tackle complicated aviation issues, and not keep handing them over to paid third parties.

Mayor Torosis, Councilmembers,
Please re-appoint Diane Reynolds to the Airport Commission.

Ms. Reynolds serves in a role not everyone would choose for themselves.

She has acted in the interests of the people of Santa Monica, even while the hobbyists, lobbyists and polluters currently occupying public land strive relentlessly to make her life, and all our lives, miserable.

Diane Reynolds has gained 4 years of invaluable experience; please give her the opportunity to help take the Airport Commission through the final stretch.

Here’s to 1/1/2029, which is getting closer by the day.
