Subject: Item 4.C: Make Wilshire Actually Safe
EXTERNAL
City Councilmembers
As a Santa Monica resident, driver, pedestrian, biker, and parent, writing for myself, I want to urge you to go further than the approved Wilshire Boulevard Safety Study plans and actually make Wilshire Boulevard safe for all.
For example, Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) are not enough for a street as busy as Wilshire, and they could even open up the City to liability if they are not protective enough to meet standards for a crosswalk on such a road. Instead, I urge consideration of HAWK signals or full traffic signals. Yes, they cost more, but lives are at stake.
There are many other ways to rethink a plan that is now woefully out of date. The poor safety record of the earlier phases of the Wilshire project speaks volumes.
Please act for the Santa Monicans (rightly) scared to cross the street and for those who have suffered tragedy on the street.
