Hello Santa Rosa City Councilmembers,
I am writing to urge you to appoint Michael Stanford to the open District 3 council seat.

As we learned about Mr. Stanford's application for the appointment too late to have him go through our 350 Bay Area Action endorsement process (350 Sonoma partners with 350 Bay Area Action for endorsements), I am writing as an individual environmental and labor activist to ask that you appoint Mr. Stanford.

To arrive at my own endorsement, I carefully read through each applicant's application for the position, as well as consulted with fellow local environmental, labor, and social justice organizers on their knowledge of the candidates. I came away from this process thoroughly convinced that Michael Stanford is, far and away, the best candidate for the council.

As a labor activist and new board member of North Bay Jobs with Justice, I appreciate Mr. Stanford's involvement with his union chapter, and his work advocating for the County's Living Wage Ordinance.

Santa Rosa workers deserve a
strong labor advocate on council.

As an environmental activist, I believe Mr. Stanford would bring valuable knowledge to the council from his work as a park aide in the Russian River District,
especially as the City designs and implements vegetation management plans to prevent wildfires. Additionally, in his application, I appreciate his recognition on the link between the effects of climate change and income inequality:

That Mr. Stanford recognizes that the most disadvantaged of our community members are the hardest hit by the ongoing climate emergency gives me confidence that he will be a positive leader in the area of climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Furthermore, Mr. Stanford's work as a tenant advocate is valuable to climate change mitigation, as affordable housing, in addition to being a social justice issue, is a climate issue (people who cannot afford to live close to their jobs in Sonoma County must commute from neighboring, more affordable counties).

Alarmingly, Mr. Stanford is the only candidate to mention anything about climate or the environment in his application. This is deeply concerning. In a city so impacted by the climate crisis, and with a population that cares deeply about environmental issues, we need council members that are aware of and take climate and other environmental issues seriously.

Lastly, I had the pleasure of presenting with some of my high school students our SB 1383: short-lived climate pollutants
slide show to Mr. Stanford's Sebastopol
Lion's club last month. Mr. Stanford was wonderfully encouraging and welcoming to my (nervous) student presenters, asking them great questions and giving them positive feedback.

In my work with the annual SRJC Climate Action Night event, I help students become involved in local civic issues. Leaders like Mr. Stanford are exactly who we need to give young people the confidence to participate and lend their voices to public discourse.

Thank you so much for considering my endorsement of Michael Stanford for the Santa Rosa City Council opening.

Sincerely,

Sunny Galbraith

Dear members of Council:

Having recently moved to Santa Rosa, I am encouraged by the City's attempts to respond to growing inequality and the climate crisis. However, I believe we can and must do more.

This is why I am writing to support Michael Stanford's appointment to the District 3 Council seat. His commitment to taking on these issues distinguishes him from the other applicants, and I hope you will name him to the seat.

Thanks very much for your consideration.

Dear Santa Rosa City Council members.

I am writing to urge you to appoint Michael Stanford to the open District 3 council seat.

As a member of 350 Sonoma Climate action steering committee I am someone who greatly appreciates Mr Stanfords perspectives and recognition of the links between the effects of climate change and income inequality. I am writing as an individual environmental and labor activist to ask that you appoint Mr. Stanford.

I am concerned that Mr. Stanford is the only candidate to mention anything about climate or the environment in his application. This is deeply concerning. We desperately need leaders who understand how the climate crisis affects low income workers, and how to transition to a zero carbon city that works for everyone.

I believe that Mr Stanford is the best candidate for theses times.

Thank you so much for considering my endorsement of Michael Stanford for the Santa Rosa City Council opening.

Sincerely,

Christine Hoex
Santa Rosa Resident since 1960.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] re Santa Rosa City Council will be appointing a replacement for Jack Tibbets Date: Monday, February 7, 2022 11:32:19 AM
Hello Santa Rosa City Councilmembers,
I am writing as a rural property owner in Sonoma County, very concerned about climate change as it affects me and our land already, with increasing droughts, diminished rain levels, and about 30 fewer fog days a year, all of which increase fire risk in our area. We are on a well, so the amount of rain available for catchment and replenishment of our water table and creeks is a major concern to me. I want a council member who acknowledges we have climate change already and need to be pro-active as well as prepare for what is to come. Santa Rosa City Council has a leadership role to play here.

As I have read through each applicant's
application for the position, I became convinced that

Hello Santa Rosa City Councilmembers,

I am writing as a Santa Rosa city resident and concerned mother and citizen to ask you to appoint Michael Stanford for the seat vacated by Jack Tibbets.

My primary concerns are climate change, affordability of life in Santa Rosa, and social and racial equity more broadly.

Having reviewed all the applications, I believe Michael Stanford is the only candidate who demonstrates a sufficient understanding of these issues, and their interconnection, to warrant appointment.

Thank you for considering this when making your decision.

All best,

Dear City Council,
I trust my friend and co-activist, Sunny Galbraith, who has sent you a detailed and experience based support for Michael Stanford. We would certainly be endorsing Mr. Stanford at 350 Sonoma if there was time to do so.

It is essential that we have someone representing us who is fully aware of the climate crisis and is committed to ensuring that our community deals compassionately and effectively with the multiple crises facing our residents.

Thank you,
Anne Jacopetti, 350 Sonoma Steering Committee, member of Alliance for a Just Recovery and SoCo CAN.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Replacement Recommendation
Date: Monday, February 7, 2022 12:16:22 PM
Hello Councilmembers,
I am writing to recommend Michael Stanford as the the council's replacement. As sustainability and climate adaptation are two key issues of mine, I believe Michael, with his statement of advocacy, is the best person for the position. All elected leaders are now environmental leaders by default as we enter the age of constant proactive and reactive measures to ensure that climate change does not negatively effect our citizenry.

Thank you for your time.

Hi,
Please add my name to those asking that the city council appoint Michael Stanford to the city council. As a resident concerned about climate change and our city's actions to address it, Mr. Stanford appears to have the bonafides to help the council going forward on this critical issue. As our city seeks real actions that actually reduce emissions to the degree necessary to achieve its resolved net zero by 2030, we need members who acknowledge the issue and appear
to be dedicated to addressing it. Please appoint Mr. Stanford to the council.

Thank you,

Dear Mayor and City Council Members:

We encourage you to select Michael Stanford to replace Council Member Tibbets. He understands the importance of addressing the Climate Crisis that our city faces. He also understands the challenges that working families have in trying to rent in our county. Many of our families struggle to live in Santa Rosa as they do not earn enough to do more that barely survive. Mr. Stanford knows first-hand that struggle and will add an important voice to our City Council and we strongly support him.

Thank you for your service to our City.

Regards,

Chris Thompson and Tom Amato
