Subject: [EXTERNAL] Support for Agenda Items 4.2 and 13.5 Date: Saturday, August 3, 2024 4:17:05 PM
Greetings Councilmembers,
On behalf of Santa Rosa YIMBY, an all-volunteer association of ~300 Santa Rosa residents dedicated to building Santa Rosa into an affordable, vibrant, low-carbon city for all, I'm writing to share our support for Vision Zero and TPW Director Hennessey's recommendation to prioritize infrastructure improvements to achieve it. Slowing down cars will help make Santa Rosa's streets safer for bikes and pedestrians; improve air quality and reduce emissions; and make our neighborhoods and downtown more enjoyable places to spend time and money.

We're also very supportive of Agenda item 13.5, the County's application for the Safe Streets and Roads for All Program and respectfully urge your vote for that as well.

Thank you for your leadership and for considering our views.

Best,
Adrian Covert

To the Santa Rosa city council,
As a resident of the 2nd district of Santa Rosa, I'm writing to express my support for Vision Zero and to applaud Director Hennessey's recommendation to prioritize infrastructure improvements to achieve it.

Our city has made terrific progress this year making Santa Rosa's streets safer for bikes and pedestrians, but we must continue working towards slowing vehicular traffic if we really want to achieve our goals. This also helps to improve air quality, reduce emissions, and makes our neighborhoods and downtown more enjoyable places to spend time and money.

I'm also very supportive of Agenda item 13.5, the County's application for the Safe Streets and Roads for All Program and respectfully urge you to vote YES on that as well.

Thank you,
Evan Wiig

My name is Tricia Day and I live in the Memorial Hospital neighborhood of Santa Rosa.

I support Vision Zero and am happy to see that Director Hennessey has a recommendation to prioritize infrastructure improvements to achieve it.

Focusing on safe streets for pedestrians, bicyclists, wheelchairs, walkers, and other modes of non-carbon transportation is important. This improves our community's health and keeps us safe.

Slowing down cars will help make Santa Rosa's streets safer for bikes and pedestrians; improve air quality and reduce emissions; and make our neighborhoods and downtown more enjoyable places to spend time and money.

Agenda item 13.5, the County's application for the Safe Streets and Roads for All Program is much needed. I respectfully urge you vote in favor of it.

Thank you,
Tricia Day

Dear Mayor and Council members:

I am writing to support the proposals from your Transportation and Public Works Department to move ahead with assertive action to reach Vision Zero through curb extensions, crosswalks, bike lanes, and other ways to slow down cars and save lives.

It is time to change our attitudes about cars, which kill so many pedestrians and bicyclists as well as drivers, and engineer for safety rather than convenience/ease of driving. We should not tolerate this carnage in our community. We changes our attitudes about smoking over a 10 year period, and we now can’t imagine eating in a restaurant where someone is smoking at the next table. We need to have a similar change about driving unsafely and at the same time, adopt engineering approaches that make cars slow down and keep pedestrians and bicyclists safe.

I live near Montgomery Drive and was thrilled to get a lighted crosswalk on my corner, making it safe to cross Montgomery and walk to Montgomery Village and to the homes of friends on the other side of the street.

Thank you for saving lives through active implementation of Vision Zero.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] comment on Agenda item 4.2: Vision Zero Date: Monday, August 5, 2024 3:49:03 PM
Dear Mayor Rogers and Councilmembers-
Two years ago, the city adopted Vision Zero, setting a goal of no fatalities or serious injuries on the city's roadways by 2030. While the goals of Vision Zero now come up in conversations and proposals for specific road updates led by city staff, the city has not yet fully integrated the goals of Vision Zero in its transportation budget priorities, overall road designs, and broad transportation plans.

I write in support of Director Hennessey's proposed plan to expand the city's efforts to reach its Vision Zero goals.

Accomplishing this will make our streets safer for all Santa Rosans, regardless of whether they choose to drive, walk or bike.

Dear Mayor Rodgers and council members,
The fact that we (people of Santa Rosa) have to ask for a lower transportation body count to be a high priority of the city is ridiculous. Our city leadership needs to be focused on saving and improving lives of all of our demographics, and acting on Vision Zero is one of the most prominent places where that need is not being fulfilled. As a high school student, I just want to be able to get to and from school without risking injury and death. Please, support Director
Dan Hennessey's proposal to further Vision Zero and protect our city's population.

Santa Rosa Vision Zero
Dear Santa Rosa City Council,
My name is Collin Thoma and I am the Systems Change Advocate with Disability Services and Legal Center (DSLC). My comments today are about the update on Sonoma County Vision Zero plan.

In order for Santa Rosa to achieve the goal of Vision Zero it’s vital that policies and improvements are made to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities and seniors. This will mean improving fixed route bus, paratransit services, micro-transit and first/last mile connections. These services are important for those who are unable to drive due to their disability and/or age. It is also extremely important that safety and accessibility improvements are made to the bike and pedestrian network. This will mean maintaining sidewalks and filling sidewalk gaps to allow for safe and easy use by those who use mobility devices. Additionally, it's important for crosswalks to have detectable rumble strips to indicate the beginning or end of a crosswalk.

Additionally, it’s important that crosswalks are highly visible for motorists, by being painted in bold stripping and have curb cut outs. Furthermore, it's very important that crosswalks are signalized and provide adequate time for those who need extra time to cross due to their physical disability(s).

It would also be good to see crashes both from vehicle collisions and vehicle vs pedestrian collisions involving people with disabilities and seniors. This data is important as it is often lacking and will help determine areas that need improvements.

Thank you for taking time to review my comments on the update for Vision Zero. I also appreciate the City’s commitment to achieving this important goal as it will greatly benefit people with disabilities and seniors.

Sincerely,
Collin Thoma
