Importance: High
Dear Mayor Stapp and Councilmembers,

I am writing today to express my strong and very enthusiastic support for the new Active Transportation Plan. I hope you will not only pass this plan but also fund its construction
as quickly as possible.

The plan is particularly valuable to me because I am about to resume commuting from my home in Bennett Valley to my workplace at SRJC on Mendocino Ave. I am very excited about this, but I’m also apprehensive, because
there are several segments of the commute that lack any bike lane or safe way to travel by bike.

Getting my car off the road will go a long way toward making Santa Rosa a nicer place to live, will bring me daily joy, and help me be a healthier person – all of these things will result in less demand on our city’s support services. But it won’t happen unless you pass this item. Please, please do this!

Thank you for your consideration and support,

Dear Mayor Stapp & Councilmembers,
Having safer biking and walking paths for Santa Rosans is a no brainer. I've got another reason why this plan should be adopted --
We can't stop drivers from being dangerously clueless, but large-scale, high-impact projects like those proposed in the ATP would go a long way to send a distinct message: YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY ONES ON THE ROAD!
I would also suggest a highly VISIBLE public campaign on how to be good bikers be initiated at the same time as the projects are being built out. There are clueless bikers as well and the more drivers see/know what the rules are, the more they will recognize that they will be sharing the road.

Sincerely,

Dear Mayor Stapp and Councilmembers,
I am writing today to express my strong support for the new Active Transportation Plan. I hope you will not only pass this plan, but also fund its construction as quickly as possible.

The plan is particularly valuable to me because I believe in the benefits of micro mobility options.

Local and sustainable modes of transportation contribute to physical and mental health of our community. We have such a great place to ride in due to topography, climate, and beauty that it makes our local streets a great place to take advantage of for bike riding.

Dear Mayor Stapp and Councilmembers,
I am writing today to express my strong support for the new Active Transportation Plan. I hope you will not only pass this plan, but also fund its construction as quickly as possible.

I was hit by a car while pedaling down Mendocino Avenue in the bike lane on June 13. I was riding within the bike
lane, at a safe speed, wearing a helmet and brightly-
colored clothing.

Somehow the driver still turned into me.

I suffered a collapsed lung, fractured vertebrae, seven fractured ribs, a fractured sternum, and a fractured pelvis which required surgery. Now almost a month since the
accident, I am thankfully out of the hospital and
recovering at home… but my recovery will take a long
time. I still cannot walk independently. Every day hurts.

I am a third-generation Santa Rosan and I have lived in the Luther Burbank Gardens neighborhood for the past 16
years. I choose to use a bicycle for most of my travel
within the city for health reasons — not just my own
health, but environmental health and community health
too. Neighborhoods are stronger when people walk and
bike outdoors.

Distracted drivers are unfortunately a fact of life. You see it everywhere. We need better infrastructure than what
currently exists. I implore the council to approve funding for protected bike lanes and safer streets for everyone.

Dear Mayor Stapp and Councilmembers,
Santa Rosa is an amazing place to live and I want to see the city continue to invest in making life better for our residents and community.

Thank you all for your service in helping guide and support our community.

Active Transportation is good for residents, the city and creating an accessible and vibrant community that we all want to see.

As a father with young children I love being able to
navigate our city on bike and teach them about how to get around by bike.

Please support the Active Transportation Plan . Even better than supporting passing this plan would be supporting implementation, funding and policy to make active transportation a long term priority for our city and community.

Thank you.

Dear Mayor Stapp and Councilmembers,
I am writing today to express my strong support for the new Active Transportation Plan. I hope you will not only pass this plan, but also fund its construction as quickly as possible.

The plan matters to me personally not only because my son bikes to high school and my wife and I both bike to work when we can, but because friends and family members and colleagues deserve to be able to ride safely in this lovely town. Three friends of mine have been hit by cars in the last
year alone; one of them was badly injured.

The plan matters, or should matter, to the city because bicycles are a benefit to all concerned.

Every bike commuter takes a car off the road, reducing congestion and pollution and heat and noise and parking demand and the amount of infrastructure that needs to be added and the amount of wear on and maintenance required by existing infrastructure. Ample research shows that bike commuters are healthier and happier than car commuters; the more of us there are, the better off we all are.

As Santa Rosa grows and gets more populous, it will get more crowded and more dense. The Felix will add a few hundred people to the downtown core, and a few hundred cars might or might not be a problem. Our downtown plan calls for 7,000 new housing units to be built in a 720-acre neighborhood in less than 15 years; shoehorning five or ten thousand cars into downtown parking spaces and onto downtown streets will be a problem.

Keeping Santa Rosa livable will require getting people to stop driving everywhere that's
further than a five-minute walk away. That will require either a massive, expensive increase to the city bus system or moving people onto bikes and other alternate forms of transport, like bikes.

Moving people out of cars and onto bicycles requires making biking practical and attractive.

Biking is a lot less practical and attractive when it poses a serious risk of getting injured or killed while riding through a world built for cars. If bicycles are going to be a part of the city's transportation solution, now is absolutely
the time to pave the way for cycling to become a
fact of everyday life instead of an eccentricity.

Thank you for your support.

Dear Mayor Stapp and Councilmembers,
I am writing today to express my strong support for the new Active Transportation Plan. I hope you will not only pass this plan, but also fund its construction as quickly as possible.

The plan is particularly valuable to me because I am a parent and someone who cares about safer access to alternative modes of transportation like bikes and walking. Also, one of our community members was just hospitalized for weeks and is lucky to be alive after being hit by a car on Mendocino Ave on 6/13/25.

Also, as a driver, I feel much safer when cyclists have protected access and dedicated lanes.

The ATL plan is a vital for keeping our community of humans safe no matter how they like to get around town.

The plan is particularly valuable to me because my children and I use the bike paths as a primary route to get to work, school, and the overall city. My family and I would benefit very much from this plan and I can’t stress enough how important safety of pedestrians and bicyclists is, my family depends on it.

We already use the constructed paths and take the least car polluted ways, however more is always better.

I think the city has done a great job in recent years to make striping changes for bicycle lanes. Now, with more people riding bicycles, these lanes need protective barriers also. Please see the attached story of a car severely injuring an experienced bike rider on Mendocino Ave on June 13th.

I’m excited about the ATP, and I am asking you to pass the plan and fund the construction. I live downtown and work in SF, and rarely drive my car. I take my bike in the bus to the city, and I rode to Belly this evening. The improvements you’ve made to E Street and Mendocino Ave have helped me bike safer and more often, and use my car less.

Thanks for what you’ve done, and I urge you to pass and fund the ATP.

Dear Mayor Stapp and Councilmembers,
I am writing to express my wholehearted support for the new Active Transportation Plan. I hope you will not only pass this plan, but also fund its construction as quickly as possible.

This plan is incredibly valuable to me and our community. As an avid cyclist and civil engineer who commutes to work by bike and rides for leisure, I recognize the importance that intentional bike infrastructure has on fostering safety and harmony between drivers and cyclists. Our city was built with a car-first mindset and it shows. The lack of safe and prominent bicycle infrastructure has shaped driver expectancy such that cyclists are an afterthought to drivers; one of my friends was recently hit by a car on Mendocino Avenue while bicycling because a driver was not looking out for cyclists. I urge you to change this narrative by passing and funding the ATP, a plan that will make cycling on our roads commonplace, safer, and more accessible to everyone.

Dear Mayor Stapp and Councilmembers,
I’m writing today to express my strong support for the new Active Transportation Plan. I recently took up cycling, and it has truly changed my life. It’s improved my physical and mental health, helped me reevaluate my car dependency, and brought a renewed sense of joy and connection to my daily routine. I want others in our community to have the same opportunity.

Santa Rosa has so much natural beauty and potential—surrounded by parks, vineyards, and open spaces—that should be accessible without relying on stressful driving, crowded parking lots, or polluting the very nature we cherish. We want people to feel safe getting on their bikes to visit parks, explore neighborhoods, and connect with each other. Events like Taco Tuesday rides show the incredible power of the bicycle to bring people together and build community.

These moments create culture, a sense of place, and the forces that make a city feel breathable and truly livable.

We also need better access to the SMART train, whether it’s to commute during the week or enjoy a car-free adventure on the weekend. When we build systems that connect walking, biking, and transit, we give people real choices. And having options—that’s the essence of American freedom. But that freedom only exists if we make those options safe and accessible for everyone. Too many of our current bike lanes are narrow, unprotected, and leave riders vulnerable, especially on busy streets like Mendocino Avenue. Everyone deserves access to low-stress, connected bike routes that make it possible to ride without fear.

Please pass and fund the Active Transportation Plan. It’s an investment in a healthier, safer, more connected Santa Rosa—for all of us.

Thank you for your support,
Eric Wright

I am a Santa Rosa voter whose cycling has pretty much wound down to nothing since I moved here. It’s just too scary for me to get on the road in this city, where there are many dangerous streets and imho not enough cyclists consulted on how to make cycling safer.

The plan is particularly valuable to me because, as a parent who loved walking & bicycling with my son as he grew up, I believe strongly that every parent and child should feel both comfortable AND encouraged to walk & bicycle in town, safely and confidently. Yet they don't - a huge chunk of morning traffic is parents driving children to school, and that traffic is a big reason why parents don't allow their kids to walk or bicycle to school or anywhere for that matter- it's a vicious cycle! The more enhanced crossings, sidewalks, separated bike routes and paths, and designated bike lanes we provide, the more likely it is that parents and kids will actually venture out of their single family vehicles and utilize active transportation. And this is better for all of us, whether we walk, bicycle, or drive.

Santa Rosa is a beautiful city, and there’s room for improvements to make it a world- class bike-able city!
In particular, Hoen Ave between Hoen Frontage and Sonoma is in terrible shape. This segment is labeled on the map in the ATP as a Bike Boulevard. It is a main connector between Bennett Valley and downtown. However, it is in terrible shape and literally painful to bike on, which is a daily frustration. I hope this road can be re-paved and improved for bicycles.

I am writing today to express my strong support for the new Active Transportation Plan. I hope you will not only pass this plan, but also fund its construction as quickly as possible.

The plan is particularly valuable to me because I am an avid cyclist and a person who rides for fun as well as commuting to work every day rain or shine. I also am a rider and organizer for the Taco Tuesday. We have so many riders that ride from all over the city from all directions. Many of them have little kids that ride with them and i want the paths to be safe as possible. We take a risk every time we mount up and start peddeling. We need safe routes that minimizes the risk as we ride our bikes.

I do not believe the JRT crossing at stony point crossing is not being addressed. I sat in on zoom meetings during covid. That is a very UNSAFE crossing that I see drivers exiting the freeway daily and turn right into the cross walk when it has a walk sign on the north side. The south side I see cars almost rearend other cars as one car stops to allow the pedestrian/cyclist to cross the freeway entrerance.

This needs to be redone asap before we have to add another memorial for Sidney.

I am thankful for your effort and ask you keep moving forward to making the roads safer for people on bikes to be able to have safer routes across town.

Dear Mayor Stapp and Councilmembers,

I am writing today to express my strong support for the new Active Transportation Plan. I hope you will not only pass this plan, but also fund its construction as quickly as possible.

I moved to Santa Rosa from San Leandro four years ago. I was drawn to Santa Rosa, in part, because of the access to what felt like more bike-friendly routes in this town. My previous husband was killed while riding his bike in San Leandro in 2011, and I was understandably terrified to ride there after that tragedy. My current husband and I ride almost daily through Howarth Park, out to Spring Lake, and down Channel Drive, then back to our home on Medica Road via Newanga and Summerfield. That’s a fantastic route of mostly shared-use paths, but there's a need for improvement elsewhere in Santa Rosa. The proposed Active Transportation Plan is a well-thought-out solution to these needs.

I look forward to being able to brag to my East Bay biking friends about what Santa Rosa has implemented!

I am strongly in favor of the proposed Active Transportation Plan (Item 16.1) on the July 7 agenda, and encourage the City Council to approve - and fund - it without delay. I have an adult child with a vision impairment that means he is unable to drive. He can and does, however, ride his bike everywhere. The proposed improvements will be a boon to his mobility and make it dramatically safer for him to travel more places around town. I regularly ride my bike in town as well and will be deeply grateful for the sense of increased safety and enjoyment the improvements bring. Thank you! Steve
