Hello Councilmembers and City Manager. The Agenda summary statement clearly declares “The attached statements are not intended to be community-wide, rather they are intended to serve the organization, it’s staff and leaders in the day-to-day decision making and culture of the City organization.“ I applaud this effort to help the city team work collaboratively and with a sense of purpose. The Mission and Share(d) Values shown appropriately reflect the perspective of being from the inside (of the organization) looking out.
But the Vision statement, as written, seems to make a broader claim and I would encourage the following revision (or something similar) so that it does not overstep its intended bounds:
Vision:
Scotts Valley City Staff is committed to sustaining is a healthy, safe, and welcoming city, rooted in hometown values and appreciation for the natural environment that surrounds us.
Just for reference purposes, I’ve attached the (still?) ‘official’ Mission statement, dating back to the 1994 General Plan and reviewed during the 2017 General Plan Advisory Committee activity. An updated document (Vision Statement and Guiding Principles) was crafted during that process although it’s not clear what will become of that. But there has always been widespread appreciation of the poetic nature of the opening phrase in that original Mission statement: “…the environment of a tranquil, verdant forest, and the services of a modern small city” that I hope will remain available to current and future residents.
Best regards,
Michael Shulman

Dear Mayor Dilles,
I am writing to you and your fellow council members to express my support for continuation of the annual Scotts Valley Independence Day Celebration, and especially the fireworks show.
I am aware objections have been raised about the noise and environmental concerns that come along with a fireworks show. But, what the heck, we are only talking about one night out of the year and of that night, the show goes on for less than half an hour. Should the thousands that come to enjoy the show be deprived of it because of the objections of a few who don’t want to be inconvenienced for 30 minutes? And how much environmental damage can possibly be done as a result of this relatively small show?
This event is a long standing and cherished part of Scotts Valley’s “culture.” It provides local non-profits with a chance to fundraise. It brings joy to children who come from throughout the county and beyond to enjoy the evening and the show.
It inspires patriotism as we join together to celebrate America! I sincerely hope that the Council sees fit to continue this wonderful tradition.
Sincerely,
Jim Melehan
