Proclamation
PROCLAIMING MAY 2024 AS BIKE MONTH
WHEREAS, May is National Bike Month, promoted by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast since 1956, a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more people of all ages and abilities to giving biking a try; and WHEREAS, since 2004, May Is Bike Month has been celebrated across the Sonoma County Region and events are planned throughout the month to promote and encourage people to try bicycling for some of their trips; and
WHEREAS, every day is a good day to choose riding a bike, but May is special because people want to get outside, enjoy our wonderful city in warmer weather, and enjoy Sebastopol’s bike lanes and trails for recreational riding, commuting, and seeing the city we call home; and WHEREAS, since a recent study found that when an individual replaces one car trip per day with a bike trip, that person reduces their carbon emissions from transportation by 67 percent, just one small change in your daily life which contributes to a healthier future for our planet and nation; and WHEREAS, since using a bike for transportation can help improve personal health and air quality, Sebastopol residents should be encouraged to try an active alternative for transportation such as biking instead of a car; and
WHEREAS, celebrating May Is Bike Month is simple: go for a ride -- any ride, whether it’s a short trip for coffee or a miles long ride, for any way you choose to ride a bike is the right way to ride a bike; and WHEREAS, the month of May is a great time to check with local cycling clubs or our local bicycle shops to find other people with which to ride; and
WHEREAS, Thursday May 16th 2024 is Bike to Work Day and encourage everyone to join in a host of cycling activities, challenges, and classes throughout the month of May.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the I, Mayor Diana Garnder Rich, on behalf of the City Council of the City of Sebastopol hereby proclaim the month of May, 2024 as May Is Bike to Wherever Month in Sebastopol.
