Dear Mayor Zollman, Vice Mayor McLewis, and Councilmembers Carter, Hinton, and Maurer,
I am writing to express my concerns regarding the city's consideration of switching garbage collection services from Recology to Sonoma County Resource Recovery (SCRR).
The importance of compost and recycling collection seems to me, to have been improperly addressed in the 'AGENDA ITEM (8) REPORT FOR MEETING OF: January 7, 2025
From: Mary Gourley, Assistant City Manager'. This report gives me the distinct impression that compost and recycling collection are being frowned upon ("base levels"?), and customers that want to keep at their existing collection levels will face significantly higher fees.
These services are essential for meeting state regulations and reducing our environmental impact.
Furthermore, SCRR's lack of a local recycling facility will result in increased transportation distances and associated emissions.
I urge the City Council to carefully evaluate all factors, including the true cost of SCRR's services and the potential environmental impacts, before making a decision.
Sincerely,
John ODonnell
Sebastopol Resident
