Dear City Council Members,
My name is Kelly Bertoli. I am speaking out as a concerned lifelong citizen of Sebastopol and a friend of a tenant at Woodmark Apartments.
I am asking you to approve an Urgency Just Cause Eviction Ordinance that takes effect on the first day of tenancy for current and future tenants. Accompanied by three months of market-rate relocation assistance that doesn’t require signing away of legal rights. An Urgency Ordinance is the only protection that would ensure that all the remaining families at Woodmark are covered by the 14th of December, as well as tenants in other deed-restricted housing.
This Ordinance should be passed to ensure that our communities' most vulnerable populations that rely on affordable housing are protected. My dear friend lives at Woodmark and is a single parent who worked very hard to secure a safe/affordable place to raise her child. It was such a blessing to see her find this home and it's been a horror story to hear that it is being taken away from her due to no fault of her own. Affordable housing is already such a rare thing and the wait times to get into a home are outrageous. My dear friend and the other tenants deserve to be protected in these even harder times that we are living in today.
This is why I am standing with others to ask that Sebastopol take immediate action to support an Urgency Just Cause Ordinance to cover deed- restricted housing like Woodmark. These protections are just one step you have the power and opportunity to take to protect your constituents. Thank you for taking the time to hear us.
