Subject: Agenda Item 12: Support for Soccer Fields
Dear Mayor McLewis and Members of the City Council,
My name is Tim Elliott, and I am writing to express my strong support for finding locations for soccer fields in Sebastopol. I've been volunteer coaching youth soccer in Sebastopol for the past five years, and my three children play soccer here. I have seen the positive impact this team sport has on countless young people's lives. It builds confidence, gets them outdoors and away from personal entertainment devices, and fosters community connection among players and parents.
Two weeks ago, we hosted a Japanese visitor as part of the Sebastopol World Friends Takeo program. My highlight was when we gathered for a soccer game. Our Japanese visitors and the Sebastopol host families played, cheered, and competed in a game that bridged all language barriers. I was proud to see the skill and positive attitude that both the Sebastopol and Takeo kids brought to the match. It made me hopeful for our future.
Our club, Wesco, has grown and needs more field space. Furthermore, Every time I coach a training session, I see neighborhood children spontaneously using these soccer fields to meet their friends and play. These spaces give our youth space to engage in positive and healthy activities.
