Whereas, bicycling is a healthy, affordable, and environmentally sustainable way to get around, while also supporting recreation and connection to Sebastopol’s neighborhoods and natural beauty; and
Whereas, safe and accessible streets benefit everyone, whether walking, biking, driving, or rolling, and contribute to a stronger, more vibrant community; and Whereas, the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition has, since 2001, worked to make Sonoma County safer and more accessible for people who bike through education, advocacy, and communitybased programs; and Whereas, through its Safe Routes to School program, the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition partners with schools across Sonoma County to promote walking and bicycling, provide safety education, and support healthier, safer school communities; and Whereas, the Coalition’s Bike Rodeos and on-bike classes provide hands-on safety training for students, teaching skills such as navigating intersections, signaling, balancing, and avoiding obstacles, while also offering helmet fitting and basic bicycle safety support so that all students can participate; and
Whereas, these programs reach thousands of local students each year, helping build confidence, improve safety, and encourage lifelong healthy transportation habits; and Whereas, during the month of May, residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in events and activities that promote safe bicycling, awareness, and shared responsibility on our roads.
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that I, Mayor Jill McLewis, do hereby recognize the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition and commends the institution for its contributions to the community, and Now, Therefore, Be It Further Resolved, that I, Mayor Jill McLewis, do hereby proclaim May 2026 as Bike Month and May 14, 2026 as Bike to Work Day in Sebastopol, and urge all residents to participate in this special observance.
