Describe the Issue
I am deeply disappointed in the new Sebastopol 4th of July celebration (held on the 3rd). It is a blatant commercialization of this sacred American holiday meant for all to enjoy. To close off a large section of Sebastopol (Johnson and Morris streets) for the benefit of one organization (the Kiwanis Club) and deny those not able to afford the $3 then $20 fee to its various entertainment venues runs counter to the spirit of of the 4th of July holiday. I have lived on Johnson street for almost 15 years and though the 4th celebration is a bit rowdy I have never seen anything criminal or dangerous take place. The police presence this year is far more than is needed and to be frank rather intimidating, akin to an ICE show of force, very discomforting and unnecessary.
The whole feel of this years celebration is rather mercenary and unfriendly.
I hope there are some corrections made for next year.
