Subject: Comment on your resolution re: hate incidents behind Safeway Date: Sunday, August 30, 2026 8:47:12 PM
To the Sebastopol City Council:

First, I want to say that I really appreciate the Council's work on drafting its resolution on the hate incidents behind Safeway. It looks like a lot of effort and care went into that document.

My main concern is that I would prefer an approach that does not involve the police, for at least two reasons:

1. The police are often seen as not only untrustworthy, but as outright hostile and threatening toward marginalized groups (especially BIPOC, immigrants, and 2SLGBTQI+ community members and their loved ones)

2. I believe that bringing in the police feeds into the (false) narrative that ideas of restorative justice, compassion, and anti-bias education are just "woke" notions enforced by "woke" society and therefore easily dismissed Thank you again for your attention to this serious issue, and thank you for reading my comment.

Sincerely,
Megan Coffey
