“Cycles of Illumination”
2 | AJ Davis ~ Signal Hill Library ~ “Cycles of Illumination” AJ Davis ~ Signal Hill Library ~ “Cycles of Illumination” | 3 This series of wall-mounted and low relief steel and colored acrylic sculptures includes four circular elements, positioned gracefully on either side of a larger oil well at the center. Each sculpture stands as a portal, inviting viewers to journey through elements of Signal Hill’s history. Reading from left to right, these symbolic portals reference historical points in the timeline of Signal Hill and its evolution into the present day. Each would offer an Augmented Reality experience that brings the sculpture to life via a smartphone or tablet for an extra level of technological engagement offering educational insight amidst a unique animation.

CONCEPT
Five wall-mounted, 2D steel and colored acrylic
relief sculptures on painted concrete.

Each sculpture can fit in a separated or designated 4’ x 4’ zone or exist on a 4’ x 20’ section of the wall and read as a single composition. 4 | AJ Davis ~ Signal Hill Library ~ “Cycles of Illumination” I felt that representing the Tongva
basket design both honored their
creative and artistic pursuits as
well as their utilitarian techniques
and fit the theme of the circular
presentations perfectly.

This is an abstract representation of a mission style basket, relevant to the techniques used by the Tongva tribe. In its final iteration, I would like to create this sculpture more relevant to a real Tongva basket design like the one featured on the right. working graphic rendering
Tongva basket
The bull is a tribute to the ranchos and the rich agricultural history in Signal Hill. It represents the evolution of the land, its purpose, and its development post Spanish settlement. “Signal Hill’s first owner on record was Manuel Nieto, who received the land in 1784 as a grant from King Carlos III of Spain. Nieto later divided the land into six cattle and horse ranchos, two of which encompassed Signal Hill: Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos. Later purchased by New Englanders, the ranchos were used mostly for grazing and agriculture in the 1800s.” (https://www.cityofsignalhill.org/218/History-of-Signal-Hill#:~:text=Signal%20Hill’s%20 first%20owner%20of,Alamitos%20and%20Rancho%20Los%20Cerritos) The graphic rendering on the left is a representation of the style and direction I would like to go rather than a final draft design. If awarded the project, I will work with the committee on the final design so that it appropriately represents the actual Tongva basket design (shown on the right).

AJ Davis ~ Signal Hill Library ~ “Cycles of Illumination” | 5 The Zinnia flower, being the official city flower,
has its own potent history in the timeline
and cultural relevance of Signal Hill. I feel
it represents the blooming economy of the
1900’s in several respects.
“Signal Hill was home to fruit, flower, and
vegetable farms beginning in the early 1900’s.

In addition to the backyard gardens of hill
residents, land was leased by Japanese “truck
farmers” who grew produce and flowers to
sell commercially at the old farmer’s market
in Long Beach. The north and south farm
fields of Signal Hill were exclusively devoted
to flowers such as zinnias, chrysanthemums,
and gladiolas. Zinnias once grew so profusely
that they were an easy choice for the official
city flower in 1984. The City of Signal Hill
designated the flower and honored Japanese
families who once farmed the area.” (https://
www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=100452)
The last sculpture is a representation of Signal Hill in the present day. It encompasses urban elements of the city with its architectural representations, the ocean view, the landscape, and mountainous environment that surround the city, and is framed by palm trees in the foreground. It abstractly represents the contemporary and urban dynamics while also touching on the current landscape of the city and its surroundings. I included the Mister Tower in this representation to tie the composition back to an iconic monument in Signal Hill.

The presence of the oil
well itself speaks to the
rich oil history here and
the complex relationship
between humanity’s
needs and environmental
preservation. It serves
as a reminder of the
responsibility to reconcile
our actions with the
needs of our planet,
urging us to seek
sustainable practices and
to embrace progressive
initiatives for the greater
good while honoring the
fruitful and economic
history of Signal Hill.
6 | AJ Davis ~ Signal Hill Library ~ “Cycles of Illumination” Together, these circular sculptures representing native and urban elements of Signal Hill’s history positioned alongside the oil well evoke a compelling juxtaposition that mirrors the coexistence of industry and nature, emphasizing the significance of sustainability within the community.

The blue watercolor and cloud-like hand painted background acts as a mesmerizing canvas that seamlessly weaves together the composition of the five sculptures.

The fluidity of the design mimics the ever-changing nature of these elements, evoking a sense of dynamism and interconnectedness. The silhouette of Signal Hill, present in the city’s logo, has been incorporated as an element that will also be painted on the background to further root these elements in the history of this location.

While I felt painting the hilltop silhouette was a potent way to include this element in the design, we can also discuss ways in which it moves through the sculptures as well. Being that they will be primarily translucent, I felt painting it on the wall was a good choice without interrupting the design elements of the sculptures, but rather serving as another layer of the composition.

AJ Davis ~ Signal Hill Library ~ “Cycles of Illumination” | 7 These sculptures will be fabricated with very durable painted steel frames and thick acrylic sheets not susceptible to vandalism or shattering. A UV treatment will be applied so that these colors are guaranteed to stay vibrant for many years to come and ensure its life, longevity, and optical clarity. The steel will be painted to ensure its durability and low maintenance.

It is always my intention to use the best materials on the market. I only use high quality aerosol and exterior paints for my murals, and I always recommend a specific industrial anti-graffiti marine coating. This clear coat enhances the colors, evens the glare from paint application, and provides optimal UV resistance and weather protection for the longevity of both the painting and surface it is being applied to.

Life expectancy can be based on many factors including weather, sun exposure, surface condition, surface material, surface preparation, paint application, and also if a clear coat is applied (which I do use). On a well-maintained surface with a marine grade clear coat, we can expect a mural to last in prime condition for many years before any degradation starts to take place.

AUGMENTED REALITY
For this design and budget, I’m offering an Augmented Reality activation for this piece. Utilizing a smart device (cell phones/tablets), anyone can activate an animation of the mural with an app called Artivive. The viewer can open the app and point their camera at the mural, and with some image recognition software, it creates a real time animation of the artwork. AR activations are cutting-edge additions to contemporary mural work and offer an additional level of technological engagement with the mural. I will offer a year subscription with Artivive for this mural that the city can take ownership over if they so choose. Artivive offers unlimited view buyout packages for municipalities and organizations who do not want to enter into subscription-based terms of agreement.

Option #1
Option #2
When considering lighting, I wanted to give multiple options to reflect on. While the billboard/sign lighting serves as an effective all in one unit, I would love to also consider RGB solar driven LEDS. With this system, the library could curate colors to various seasons, holidays etc. These are two-part systems with a separate solar panel and lighting fixture. This would allow me to mount the solar panel up high and the light behind the sculptures to backlight them. We could also consider mounting the sculptures where the already existing lights are within the concrete wall and mount an additional light from above to get two sources of light. 10 | AJ Davis ~ Signal Hill Library ~ “Cycles of Illumination” BUDGET

ARTIST STATEMENT
My mural work honors historic references and native ecologies while focusing on techniques centered around producing realism and graphic surrealist imagery. I often pair realism with abstract geometric elements that blend together large and complex compositions, helping create colorful and smooth transitions between varying narratives and figurative components. My work speaks to diverse communities and age groups, and I always strive to reflect on and relate the art to the communities and environments that I work in. I always work with all parties to make sure that all colors, shapes, content, etc., meet each project’s parameters. It is my goal to create a visually cutting-edge experience that will engage community members of all ages to celebrate the beauty around us and the history that makes each project possible.

I am a full-time muralist and digital designer from Denver, CO, specializing in mural production, casting, and metal fabrication. I graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2013. I was the Artist Fellow for the Museum of Outdoor Arts in Englewood, CO in 2020 and helped curate and facilitate the Mural initiative at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheater in 2022. In 2016, I founded an internationally recognized jewelry and sculpture brand known as Project Street Gold and have worked alongside internationally renowned muralists and graffiti writers including Nychos, Mike Giant, and Fabian ‘Bane’ Florin to create limited edition series of cast metal sculpture. My work can be found around the world, most notably in the US, Europe, Indonesia, South America, and Central America. I am very proficient in CAD and graphic design and have worked with local VJ’s and AR specialists to projection map and create AR activated murals. I am always seeking opportunities to challenge my knowledge of painting and sculpture. “The Rose Garden”, The Spoke, Longmont, CO, 2023
