Agenda Item No. 12(c) – Potential Farmers Market Opportunities I would like to express support for a Signal Hill Farmers Market.

Aside from increasing access (and options) to fresh farm produce, prices for organic produces are generally more affordable. Farmers markets can also accept public benefits that will further enable residents to purchase more healthy and nutritious foods. Plus, the community interaction and education between the farmers, vendors, and residents will enhance the health and quality of life.

Farmers markets also promote sustainability. We have the opportunity to make our farmers market even more sustainable by allocating priority to local farmers and farmers who engage in organic and sustainable practices.

In addition, it would be great to see Signal Hill further improve and grow as a destination city. I love seeing people at our parks and trails. We can further develop our city as a healthy destination to hike, exercise, picnic, and shop for healthy foods and engage in a healthier lifestyle. We’ll have the most instagrammable farmers market with our parks and views! A farmers market will further serve as an accessible opportunity for small businesses/vendors or for aspiring entrepreneurs. Farmers markets not only house farmers but cottage foods, crafts, arts, meals, and snacks—increasing the possibilities for these small and/or aspiring businesses.

Overall, a farmers market will serve as a great community hub and asset. Not only will the community have the opportunity to connect with each other, city council, commissions, committees, and clubs/groups can table to connect with the residents and businesses of the city regularly.
