Signal Hill City Council Members and Community Development Director Colleen Doan, Please crack down on Signal Hill Petroleum (SHP) and phase out oil drilling in your neighborhood.
All of SHP’s oil and gas operations are amidst backyards, parking lots, and playgrounds. All are within the 3,200-ft health protection zone of your homes, parks, schools, businesses, and medical centers mandated by SB 1137. Residential oil drilling endangers your community with cancer, liver damage, immunodeficiency, neurological symptoms, asthma, and birth complications. This means the health of 3 zip codes (90755, 90806, 90809) and thousands of people across Signal Hill and Long Beach is at risk.
While SHP has been assuring you and your city that they adhere to strict environmental regulations, they have been responsible for more than 20 air district law violations and oil spills in the past 5 years. They are not necessary to your city’s economic wellbeing. They contribute only 1% of your city budget. Stop sacrificing the health of your constituents and the climate in exchange for oil profits you do not even see.
Instead, join the future. Culver City is phasing out the Inglewood Oil Field. Los Angeles County is phasing out oil. Do what is right.

Mel Tillekeratne of the local 501(c)(3) The Shower of Hope is by leaps and bounds the most abusive organizer I’ve ever worked with. He delights in demeaning people for having intellectual disabilities and engages in extreme emotional abuse. “Sadistic narcissist” is an apt description. Any government agency which contracts with this disturbed bully exposes itself to overwhelming liability to disability-harassment lawsuits and extreme reputational damage. I cannot overstate how horrified and sickened I am by his behavior. He is in dire need of a really good therapist.
