CITY OF SIMI VALLEY

MEMORANDUM

November 7, 2022

TO: City Council

FROM: Office of the City Manager

SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT OF SPECIAL EVENT SUPPORT REVIEW COMMITTEE

MEMBERS

STAFF RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the City Council appoint the five nominees to the 202 3 Special Event Support Review Committee.

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW

On January 27, 2014, the City Council adopted a policy for City support of Special Events. This policy includes the creation of a Special Event Support Review Committee to review applications and make funding recommendations to the City Council, which will then review, e dit (as desired), and award funding. The City Council purposely did not mandate that a certain scoring criteria be used to score applications, but did provide the Committee with the following preferences:

- Preference to fund events where event proceeds are used locally within Simi Valley
- Preference to fund events with greater community/public benefits over events with lesser community/public benefits

The Committee is comprised of one member from each of the City’s four (4) Neighborhood Councils and one member from the Council On Aging. Those bodies have each nominated individuals for the Committee, and it is recommended that the City Council appoint the nominated committee members to the 202 3 Special Event Support Review Committee.

FINDINGS AND ALTERNATIVES

Applications for City support of Special Events taking place in 2023 were made available on November 1, 2022 (www.simivalley.org/SpecialEvents) and are due by November 30, 2022. Staff anticipates that the Committee will conduct two meetings in December 2022.

The first meeting will serve as an orientation session for the Committee members to introduce each other and learn about the program, while the second meeting will consist of the revi ew of applications and the Committee’s funding recommendations. That will then conclude the Committee’s service.
