CITY OF SIMI VALLEY
MEMORANDUM
November 4, 2024
TO: City Council
FROM: Office of the City Manager
SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT OF SPECIAL EVENT SUPPORT REVIEW COMMITTEE
MEMBERS
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council appoint the five nominees to the 202 5 Special Event Support Review Committee.
BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW
On January 27, 2014, the City Council adopted Policy No. A-31, City Support of Special Events. This policy was created to promote the development of new and expansion of existing cultural, educational, and entertainment events taking place within Simi Valley, benefiting Simi Valley, and bringing people to Simi Valley. The policy includes the creation of a Special Event Support Review Committee (Committee) to review applications and make funding recommendations to the City Council, which will then review, modify (as desired), and award funding. The City Council purposely did not mandate that specific scoring criteria be used to score applications, but did provide the Committee with the following preferences:
- Fund events where event proceeds are used locally within Simi Valley - Fund events with greater community/public benefits over events with lesser community/public benefits
The Committee is comprised of one member from each of the City’s four (4) Neighborhood Councils and one member from the Council On Aging. Those advisory bodies have each nominated individuals for the Committee, and it is recommended that the City Council appoint the nominees to the 2025 Special Event Support Review Committee.
FINDINGS AND ALTERNATIVES
Applications for City support of Special Events taking place in 2025 were made available on November 1, 2024 (www.simivalley.org/SpecialEvents) and are due by November 30, 2024. Staff anticipates that the Committee will conduct two meetings in December 2024.
The first meeting will serve as an orientation session for the Committee members to learn about the program, while the second meeting will consist of review ing applications and the Committee will make funding recommendations. That will conclude the Committee’s service.
