Declaring
Women's History Month
March 2023
in 1987, Congress established Women's History montli to celebrate the contributions American women had made to strengthen and lead the nation since its inception;
Women's History Month encourages us to recognize the unsung, under- represented roles women have played in the fomiation of our country both in the past and present;
Women's History Month honors women of every race, status, and etcity who have challenged the status quo;
Women's History Month shines light on women who made incredible sacrifices and displayed extraordinary courage and tenacity to procure equitable labor and social opportunities for future generations; American women have been leaders not only in securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opporhinity but also as the forefront ofevery major generation to enjoy the unalienable rights, duties and responsibilities afforded equally to all citizens of the United State of America; and each woman is extraordinary in her own way, proving that women working inside the home, or outside in academia, science, technology, business, labor, governance and more maintain a critical role in every sphere of society.

WHEREAS, research has shown that more than 40 percent of all cancers diagnosed and nearly half of all deaths from cancer in the United States can be attributed to preventable causes - things like smoking, excess body weight, physical inactivity, and excessive exposure to the sun; TVHEREAS, as a result, steps such as quitting smoking (or never starting in the first place), maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, protecting your skin from the sun, and getting vaccinated against the pathogens that cause certain cancers can dramatically reduce your risk of certain cancers;
WHEREAS, intheUnitedStates,manyofthegreatestreductionsincancermorbidity and mortality have been achieved through the implementation of effective public education and policy initiatives; WHEREAS, such initiatives drove down cigarette smoking rates among U.S. adults by greater than twofold from 1965 to 2017. But three out of 10 cancer deaths are still caused by cigarette smoking, and lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer-related deaths for both men; TVHEREAS, it remains irffperative that we identify strategies to enhance the dissemination and implementation of our current knowledge of cancer prevention; and
TVHEREAS, because the burden of preventable cancer risk factors is not shared equally-and that burden is higher among racial and ethnic minorities and other underserved people-it is imperative to implement effective evidence-based practices that reduce risky behaviors for everyone.
