since Memorial Day originated on May 30, 1868, Americans pause to observe a special day and National holiday set aside to remember with dignity and admiration those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation; and
on National Vietnam War Veterans Day, we honor all those who bravely served in the Vietnarn War and who sacrificed, as did their families and caregivers, on behalf of our Nation; and Memorial Day is designated to pay tribute to our American Soldiers who fought and died so that we may live in freedom and maintain the legacy left to us by our forefathers; and in 2012, our Nation launched a 13-yr long commemoration of tlie 50th anniversaiy of the Vietnam War to ensure that every veteran, family, caregiver, and survivor impacted by the difficult years in Vietnam feels our Nation's gratitude for their sacrifice; and the names etched in The Wall at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial remind us of our loved ones who gave their all and never came home; and
the veterans who fought and died for our country helped preserve the freedoms and rights guaranteed to all people under the U.S.

Constitution; and
Memorial Day provides us with the opportunity to reflect and honor the past, to renew and pass on our patriotism, and pay tribute to those who died in service to our country.

NOW, THEREFORE, be it proclaimed on tis 23'd day of May 2023 that I, Maria del Pilar Avalos, Mayor of the City of South Gate, on behalf ofthe City Council, do hereby declare May 29, 2023, as Memorial Day in tribute and honor to those who lost their lives in the name of freedom. I further invite citizens to attend the City's Memorial Day Ceremony on May 27, 2023.

in May, we are reminded not only of the htunan mind's iminense strength but also some of its lin'fftations. It is a reminder that we are not macliines and that it is completely normal to feel the emotions tliat we do. And rmlike macliines, we liave tlie strengtli to get better on our own by lielping each other; and
there are two types of trauma and they range in the severity of the causes and triggers: the 'Big T' is any type of trauma that has occurred due to a life-threatening situation like wars, natural disasters, physical assault, etc., wile the 'Small t' is caused due to a disturbing event that is not life-threatening like divorce, abruptrelocation, financial woes, etc.; and maiiy people recover from PTSD after a few days, weeks, or months. Yet, for others, tlie recovery road might mean one year or more. This mental disorder is highly treatable, but due to the lack of 1<iiowledge around it as well as the stign'ia attached to seeking mental help, many clioose to ignore the problem aiid suffer througli it; and
June is National PTSD Awareness Month. Its goal is to raise awareness about said mental illness for people to recover from it by seeking better and effective treatments like grorip tlierapy, cormseling, and antidepressants; and
the more talk tliere is about PTSD, tlie more people will become aware of it, and the more people will seek treatment for it. The road to recovexy may look different from one person to another, but it is always there.
