Bicycles now need to go into traffic to get around the bus stop ramps, especially if a bus is stopped at the location. They do not slow down to go over it. Cars also now must stop behind the buses, and will dart around the bus trying to get going again. On El Camino headed north, often cars are doing 50+ mph trying to beat the light, and the buses now causes the threat of a major accident, instead of the bus pulled to the curb as before, keeping the curb lane open for cars to pass.

SSF has the opportunity to be ahead of any of the other cities in SMC in terms of bike lane safety. I regularly bike travel (4x week) from my house in SSF to Redwood City and having such class 4 protection on ECR is extremely helpful and provides a level of safety that is warranted given how fast folks drive, checking phones and other distractions. Why wouldn't the project be extended from north end to south end of the City? It seems like a no-brainer in the 21st century.

A monumental waste of money to cater to 1% of the people that bicycle in San Mateo County according to a Grand Jury Study. Talk about catering to special interests. According to the mayor, by 2040 more than half of SSF will be senior citizens. You gonna' tell them to ride a bike? You want a body count, this is a great idea to accomplish that.

Horrible design. Bus passengers waiting for bus now stand on the island that within the bike lane, making it unsafe for bicyclists.

Generally unsafe for bicyclists and passengers getting on/off bus, forcing bicyclists to either stop, or go on the sidewalk, or go into traffic around the bus. Horribly stupid and dangerous design. Busses block the right hand lane, which blocks traffic in that lane, so drivers trying to get out and around the bus can cause accidents forcing their way into the center lane. just causes a lot more congestion and confusion.

My most direct work commute route from South Westborough to East Grand Ave (101) bypasses this ECR stretch, but since learning of the installation, I’ve extended my morning commute a few times to include this span to get a better sense of what this could mean for expansion to other stretches of ECR. That said, I’m just providing my initial impressions:

1. The intermittent posts provide a nice physical separation for bikes without disrupting cars from entering/leaving businesses.

2. The posts also allow for riders to move over to the left turn lane on Spruce when it is clear, but for less experienced commuters, probably best to ride down to ECR/Spruce, dismount, and walk bike across ECR. Left turn lane (SB El Camino) at Spruce gets backed up, leading to drivers merging to middle/right lanes abruptly at times.

3. Bus ramp at Country Club drive is an effective way to reduce bus and car traffic for bicyclists (not having to merge into traffic to avoid bus in shoulder)

4. As mentioned previously, this stretch of ECR is not in my usual commute route, so I can’t speak to the impact before/after installation. However,I would support thoughtful implementation of safety measures for bicyclists to promote or encourage others to use it (bikes) as an alternate, viable means of transportation where possible.

I see people biking on the sidewalk anyways, more traffic congestion when the bus stops and does not have the

No. The bike lane on El Camino in South San Francisco presents significant safety risks for children biking to school. Due to the frequent high-speed vehicle traffic on El Camino, alongside observed instances of cyclists opting to ride in the main roadway, it's evident that the current bike lane design may not provide adequate protection. Given the traffic congestion caused by buses unable to pull off, the potential for accidents increases. I came from Fremont for this event. I am hardly ever in South San Francisco except occasionally to visit family. However, I really enjoyed the bike ride from BART along Centennial Way Trail and also trying out the temporary build along ECR. Although it was a relatively short segment, it felt very safe. I don’t have anything to really compare it to since I’m not here often, but I couldn’t imagine biking along ECR without the protected bike lane, and I’m a fairly confident rider. With the temporary protected bike lane there, it felt doable.
