Martin Elementary’s Safe Routes to School Improvements

City staff received the San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) Safe Routes to School 2023 School Travel Fellowship grant to build temporary demonstration projects at Martin Elementary. The demonstration projects are based on recommendations from the Safe Walk to School Audit completed last year and will help encourage students and families to walk and bike to school. The projects will also test and receive feedback on future permanent improvements around the school.
City staff is partnering with Martin Elementary’s Principal and faculty, SMCOE and Alta Planning + Design (Fellowship Team) to brainstorm and conceptualize these demonstration projects. The Fellowship Team has chosen two demonstration sites at School St & Olive Ave and Hillside Blvd & Arden Ave for the temporary improvements as shown below:
This is a project update from the previous memo earlier this month.
The painting of the high-visibility intersection at School St and Olive Ave was completed by the Fellowship Team on Sunday, September 24th. Please see the following photos of the installation:

Flyers with the project’s information and a link to a survey were placed around the temporary improvements’ sites.
These flyers will also be shared with Martin Elementary for further engagement with the students and families. The received feedback will help aid in the design of the future permanent street improvements around the school.
