SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
Why do you want to serve on the Youth Commission? Why do you believe the Youth Commission is important?
I have been a SSF resident my entire life. I grew up playing in the streets, parks, and library, and these places quickly defined my idea of a community. However, throughout my K-8 education, which occurred in a private school in another city, I admittedly had a lack of relationship, a severed connection to my city. I was not involved in any way, and the City was just a place where | lived. After the Covid-19 pandemic and going into my freshmen year at El Camino High School, I hoped that a connection to SSF would come naturally, and flourish under my education there. However, after two years at ELCO, I realized that connection is very easy to avoid if you do not actively seek it out. I started to look for more ways to become involved, and found that becoming connected to the city was surprisingly simple and easy. After only 6 months, I was able to meet and converse with many of the city workers and found that their passion for the city was inspiring. I believe that serving on the Youth Commission is important because of the power it holds and its potential for change. Youth voices are just as important as adult voices, and require as much attention as them. Simply being on the Commission is not enough, it requires active participation in order for it to thrive and make youth voices heard. I recently spoke to one of the founders of the commission, and learned that its existence itself is proof that youth really can make a difference. I further want to be on the commission to prevent my own ignorance and lack of connection to the city in other youth, because I believe that each individual voice is important and kids and teenagers should learn that as early as possible. If i had known about the commission and importance of my own voice sooner, I could have had a larger impact on my city, which is why I hope to help others sooner.

The Youth Commission addresses issues affecting youth and the community through making recommendations to City Council. Please explain what you believe is the biggest issue concerning youth in South San Francisco today.
Being in a youth mental health commision, and a student at a high school in South San Francisco, 1 am constantly surrounded by young people. I believe that mental health is a very prevalent, important issue that surrounds youth not only in SSF, but America today. I have seen it affect people close to me in my community and I can say that it is a result of many things, including the upward increase of social media and the internet, the Covid 19 Pandemic, and societal expectations placed upon youth. I hope that by being on the Youth Commission, I can address the issue of mental health directly with the City Council, and create a more inclusive community that is aware of and will help tackle the issue of mental health in our city.
Can you commit to attending 6:30 p.m. meetings on the third Monday of each month? YES • NO If no, please explain:
